Spicy Horse downsized after Akaneiro lost $1.7 million

American McGee's Spicy Horse has downsized its Shanghai studio due to the Akaneiro: Demon Hunters failing quite massively. McGee revealed that Spicy Horse has spent about $2 million in total making the free-to-play action-RPG, which first launched at the end of January 2013, but has only made back around $300,000.

American McGee's Akaneiro turns to Kickstarter

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, the action-RPG from American McGee's Spicy Horse development studio, seemed to have a solid start. It got a formal announcement, beta sign-ups, and even has a decent shot at getting approved on Steam Greenlight. But Spicy Horse says it needs a boost to push the game the last few miles, and to that end the studio has turned to crowdfunding.

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters opens beta sign-ups, shows off gameplay

The action-RPG Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, from American McGee's dev house Spicy Horse, is edging closer to release, and developer Spicy Horse has opened beta sign-ups and released the first gameplay trailer. The game tells the story of Red Riding Hood, infused with elements of Edo-era Japanese folklore. For example, your story of Red Riding Hood probably didn't involve an order of feudal hunters searching for karma shards among dead demons.

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters announced by American McGee's studio

Spicy Horse, helmed by game designer American McGee, has announced its next game. Titled Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, the game tells the tale of Red Riding Hood through the lens of Edo-era Japan. The free-to-play game is set for PC, web, and tablets, and the beta is set to launch later this year.
