Speaking to Garnett's comment about how people might play single-player games the same way they read books:

When I play a single-player game, I set my online preferences to 'appear offline' and set message notifications to 'off'.

It's the equivalent of unplugging the phones when I want to watch a damn good movie after a long day. :)
