As someone who owns Madden Arcade and EA's NHL game, I gotta say -- you guys shouldn't be 'waiting for a version with online'. These are party games, they are consistently empty when you go into matchmaking. If you aren't planning on having buddies over to play this, you should skip it altogether. These things lose most of their charm in an internet setting -- which is probably why the Wii is the best fit.

If you want good online play, pick up Madden or NBA2k or one of the full versions.
