Anyway from what gaming journalists have said about the press events sucking ass and the one-on-one time being awesome, why does E3 even have to exist?

I also think it can be very disruptive to the development cycle considering how notorious software dev schedules can be. Devs can be forced to come up with some crap to throw at journalists whether the game is even at good state to stop and work on a presentation.
