I think it works both ways. With a popular band the music sells the game. With an unknown band the game sells the music. Overall, of course. There will be a few people who didn't realise they liked a big-name artist until hearing them in the game.
The music companies should let the games use their big artists on the condition that they also include tracks from some of their smaller ones. Maybe that's what they already do?
