While articles like these (and the one in GFW or was it PCG, I forget) make Eve Online look amazingly involved and intriguing, the reality is far from it. Only about .1 % of the player base is engaged in activities or cool events like these. The majority of their time is spent trudging about the galaxy, either mining or slogging away at your typical MMO-style quests, in the repetitious attempt to level up so that they can have a small chance to be a part of some larger picture events.
It's not that this isn't a cool happening or a good read, it is, but it's hardly representational of the Eve: Online experience which is still rather clunky all around.
