SubstanceTV Redefines DVD-Entertainment Community Building Medium to Explore Culture Through the Digital Eye

Austin, TX, August 30th, 2001 – The newly-formed publishing group SubstanceTV, Inc. today announced a new standard in DVD entertainment – the content-driven DVD videomagazine, SubstanceTV. With DVD hardware in over 25% of all US households, DVDs are becoming the home entertainment and content delivery vehicle of choice. SubstanceTV offers an innovative and interactive way of delivering multimedia content that examines contemporary culture, and its diverse subcultures, to a broad audience.

The company’s mission is to deliver high-quality video content that transcends the sound-bite mentality of today's mass media and uses advanced technology to examine the human condition through digital eyes.

"SubstanceTV aims to expose its audience to people and ideas of substance - meaningful aspects of our society that tend to get overlooked, taken for granted or merely discounted," stated Mike Wilson, publisher of SubstanceTV, Inc. " By publishing on the flexible DVD platform, SubstanceTV will present a combination of enlightenment and entertainment not available on any existing network or medium."

SubstanceTV is subscription-only and will be compatible with any home DVD player, PCs and Macs with DVD drives, and game consoles with DVD playback capability. Subscriptions to SubstanceTV are available for $14.95 (10-issue subscription for 2002 plus introductory issue) at http://substance.tv . The Introductory Issue will be released this November.

Each SubstanceTV issue will consist of over two hours of content that explores the people, ideas, and events that shape the essence of modern life. Through the powerful user interface abilities of the DVD, content will be presented via “Interactive Features” and “Freestanding Media” sections.

Interactive Features will be comprised of an ‘anchor’ piece establishing the tone and significance of the issue, supported by additional media (original or licensed) that will expand the awareness and appreciation of the concept. Each issue will include four to six features. The introductory issue includes features such as The Last Record Store, which examines the cultural phenomenon of one of the nation’s largest independent record stores as a sanctuary for an eclectic mix of musicians, street philosophers, and social misfits; Bill Hicks: A Comedy Short, a look back at Hicks' life and work through performance footage and interviews with the people who knew, were inspired by and loved him, and The Art of Post-Modern Protest, a look at activism in the U.S. and the issues that are fueling social consciousness in the 21st Century.

Freestanding Media will include short films, music videos, documentaries, movie and game trailers, digital exhibits, and public service announcements addressing today's major social issues.

SubstanceTV's content will be expanded through a premium companion Web site, allowing subscribers to mine into a wealth of material to enrich their DVD viewing experience. Through partnerships and affiliate programs, SubstanceTV will deliver the best of the Web without the hassles of surfing and search engines.
