Netflix will be jumping into the world of The Witcher, agreeing to create a drama series based around the novels and universe of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The books were also used as the foundation for CD Projekt Red's The Witcher series of games.

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over 30 years writing,” Sapkowski said in a press release revealing the project. “I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.” He will serve as a creative consultant for the series.

Sean Daniel, who worked on The Mummy franchise, Ben-Hur, and The Expanse series on Syfy, and partner Jason will be executive producers, along with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko of Polish production and visual effects company Platige Image. The latter has some experience with the source material, having worked with CD Projeckt Red on TV commercials and cinematics for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The studio created Cyberpunk 2077 teaser in 2013.

"We started production of the series based on “The Witcher” in coop. with and SeanDanielCompany. Tomek one of the dir!" Platige said from its official Twitter account.

While CD Projekt will have little if anything to do with the production, it obviously is tangentially invested in the success of the series because of its games. "We wish this project all the best and are looking forward to watching the series on Netflix," the studio told Eurogamer.

“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” Erik Barmack, Netflix Vice President, international series, said in the press release. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Netflix members around the world.”
