E3 2017: Nintendo Will Focus on Super Mario Odyssey at the Show

The company's Treehouse stream will return, in addition to Arms and Splatoon 2 tournaments.

Nintendo issued a press release earlier today detailing its plans for E3. Similar to the company's singular focus on Zelda: Breath of the Wild at last year's event, Nintendo will be putting the brunt of its promotional muscle behind Super Mario Odyssey, the newest 3D sandbox-style adventure game due to release this holiday on Switch.

"Proceedings will be headlined by the first-ever opportunity to play the Super Mario Odyssey game, Mario’s upcoming sandbox-style adventure for the Nintendo Switch system, as well as other Nintendo Switch games," per Nintendo's press release.

Nintendo will provide other activities for both attendees as well as fans following E3 from home. A video presentation will offer glimpses of more Switch games slated to release this year, and company representatives will talk in-depth about and show gameplay on the Treehouse Live stream.

E3 attendees will be able to compete in tournaments for Splatoon 2 and Arms, both of which will release this summer. Both tournaments will be streamed so viewers at home can follow along.

“Our various E3 activities will showcase the next steps for Nintendo Switch, from a summer of social competitive gaming to a holiday season highlighted by a milestone Mario adventure,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “With Nintendo Treehouse: Live at E3, fans at home can watch in-depth gameplay of Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS games launching this year."

As expected, Nintendo will not host a traditional E3 press conference this year. Instead, it will host a video presentation it's calling "Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017." That will begin at 9 AM PT on June 13, just before the show floor opens.

Shacknews will be broadcasting once again from E3 this year, so keep an eye here for more details.

That makes sense, considering how well Zelda turned out for them. Hope they have some more stuff for 1H 2018 too though.

They don't need to show anything for 2018 yet. Nintendo could hold a Direct-style presentation anytime this fall or early next year when they feel they have something material to show.

At this point, probably not, but we usually have something down the pipe to look forward to. If we don't have something for 2018 announced at e3 it'll have to be during the fall sometime.

Yeah, exactly. They'll announce stuff during the fall. I mean, we can probably guess a few titles, right? A Pokemon game. Mario Kart 9. Mario Maker 2 or Mario Maker DX. Smash Bros. 4 port or a new game.

Don't get me wrong: I'm curious. But 2018 is so far away at this point. I'm still playing Zelda and Mario Kart 8 DX, and don't plan to take a break from those until Mario Odyssey.

I think Pokemon Star, Smash (port with all DLC included), and Mario Maker 2 will be the bankable system sellers for 2018.

I'd take that, and whatever the hell Retro has been working on for several years now.

Seriously, do we know of any first party games out of the 2017 window? Seems kind of odd, there are always a least a few big far off titles for every system.

Nintendo's definitely working on games for 2018 and probably beyond, but it's not worth talking about them now, probably not at E3 either. They've got Arms, Splatoon 2, and Mario Odyssey. I'm sure we'll hear more about 2018 games toward the end of this year.

Well Splatoon and ARMS will be out around e3 or not that much later. That leaves one game in the pipeline (well, I guess we should include the nebulous 2017 smash hit to be Xenoblade 2) for quite some time unless they announce some more stuff not long after e3, at which point why not just announce it during e3?

That's my 2¢ on the issue. Mostly just me wanting to know what's next for me Switch though.

2017? That'd be interesting, I would have thought that'd be an early 2018 title but that depends on what tier Ubisoft is putting this on.

I totally agree with you, they need to show a bunch of new games for the Switch to keep things flowing and get more companies to make games for it or to be interested in it.

Everyone knows both Sony and MS are going to be going real hard at E3 and both showings should be aggressive and impressive. Basically there will be a lot of games from both camps and on top of that MS has the new hardware as well to show.

It be real weird if Nintendo is like, yeah we just have Mario you guys have to wait till next year's E3 for some new games,

I really hope they don't do that and have been saving a bunch of games. I personally think Nintendo has to really pick up in the games department. How long can they sing to their own tune and not be aware of what is happening around them in the game industry?

Maybe it doesn't matter for N(who knows), but I can not see them rolling like this forever eventually it will catch up to them. lets see where things are at in a years time with the Switch.

To me they should of delayed the Switch and launched it this December(or even better next year) with a Tegra X2, plus more CPU cores in it and more games(it would allowed 4 easy 3rd party ports too, way better battery life). I am not sure why they rushed it to the market especially since they did not even kill off their 3DS and have the Switch the be all end all. Really they had no pressure to release the Switch, all the new games on the Switch could of easily run on the Wii U.

Will see how everything pans out, I really hope they have a lot of games in the pipe.

Not announcing something new will, I think, have some people considering selling the console. Arms is not a system seller. Splatoon appeals to some but not enough.

Nintendo generally doesn't show games at E3 that won't be out until the following year at the latest. There are a few exceptions like when they pushed back BotW, but for the most part the games they show are in the home stretch.

Sony is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum where games are regularly years away or the footage is of target renders instead of actual gameplay. Everyone else does cinematics. It makes for good marketing hype, and that certainly works.

E3 is also, quite frankly, not important anymore. Nintendo revealed and successfully launched a new console 100% outside of the E3 cycle, from October through March. They can do the same with any future games.

The same thing has also applied to other companies. Blizzard didn't even wait on Blizzcon to announce Hearthstone, they did it around PAX. Sitting on reveals for a very specific live event just doesn't matter anymore now that companies have so many other channels to get their message out directly to consumers without the aid of the press.

I was thinking which old games I want on the switch that don't breakl the bank in terms of development:
-persona 4 golden (i would take 5 as well).
-super metroid remaster like the gba one for metroid1 (zero mission). If they must they can throw out another prime remaster
-dark souls1 (if its not 60 fps they can go eat a donkey dong though).

Super Metroid is already perfect, does not need a remaster. The pixel art and low-fi music samples are a large part of the game's appeal

And that one is not going anywhere, its available on original/emulation/3ds/wii/wiiu, but zero mission shows that they can streamline its controls for the better, upsample its music, fix framerate and give you the old game as a bonus when you finished it.

Originally what became zero missions was planned as a remaster of super metroid but for the same reason you claim it doesn’t need one they decided the effort was better spent on metroid1.
Its a decade+ later and if that’s what it takes to get a 2d metroid on switch, I'm on board.

Before the give me another other m or hunters I take an old classic.
