World of Goo for Nintendo Switch Can Use a Joy-Con As a Pointer

The 2D Boy title appears to emulate the Wii functionality without a sensor bar.

World of Goo is out now for the Nintendo Switch for $9.99, and trying to play it for the first time may surprise you a bit. It's like playing it on the Wii or Wii U, but without the sensor bar.

The game, from developer 2D Boy, is one of the first to use the gyroscopic sensor inside the Joy-Con to allow players to turn the controller into a pointer. You first need to put it on a flat surface to help calibrate it properly, but then it works efficiently as the Wii U controller did, although the mechanics are slightly different. The Joy-Con sensors detect how you are moving the controller and then extrapolate the data to the screen after the cursor is centered.

You then hit the plus or minus buttons on either controller to mark the center of the screen as you aim it. this method also allows both Joy-Cons to be used in this way in two-player co-op.

Here's a look at how it works, courtesy of Daan Koopman via Twitter:

The game can still be played in portable mode using the touchscreen, but it is nice to actually see the pointer functionality in action. This could also suggest that Wii ports are viable options on the Switch, even without a sensor bar, seeing as its gyroscope can apparently imitate it reasonably well.

I love that game, it has music that stays with you for years, charming visuals and a quirky sense of humor.
I bought it on multiple platforms but the only ones I would want to play it on personally are those that have a mouse or some other accurate direct input like a pen on tablets.

The showcase is a bit like "fork and chopsticks can be used to eat nintendo soup watch the video!" gyro stuff is nice for the kind mini/party games that you find in warioware.

Nothing shown in that short clip made me think "yes! That’s how I want to play it, FINALLY nitendo brings back less accurate than even Wii controls we all so desperately missed".

I can't recommend it enough. This is one of the games that for me personally define independent game-development, its brilliant game-design polished and bundled into a package that should appeal to hardcore gamers and casual folks alike.

Its one of those games that I often buy for folks to expose them to gaming.

How is it you don't have half a dozen copies through random bundles like the rest of us? I swear at one point this game was the sprig of garnish in every humble indie bundle.

Yeah I noticed that after I posted.

Finding someone who doesn't accidentally own World of Goo is like finding someone on Steam who doesn't own any Valve games.

Same with Human Resource Machine. In fact it is either touch screen or pointer, no buttons/thumbsticks.

Little Inferno is another delightful little game of theirs. Not on the same level as WoG, but worth a play.

Aw :) maybe you should follow the advice of the shack and get another kid, even odds and everything and they can keep each other company. With only 3 kids its obvious one is going to feel neglected by its peers!

Played first 3 levels with my kids (until baby started screaming), older ones were instantly interested, I love the music and art style so far and the touch controls are super tight, nice! Will try more later, thank you!
