Zelda: Breath of the Wild Speedrunners Finish Game in Less Than an Hour

Players are taking down Ganon in less time than it took me to get to Kakariko Village

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already being conquered in less than an hour by speedrunners. Speedrunner gymnast86 has taken down Ganon and seen the credits in 58 minutes and 1 second, faster than I could even get off the Great Plateau. Using a combination of tricks and glitches, speedrunners are blazing through Hyrule, but some methods are causing a stir in the speedrunning community.

Besides optimizing their routes, speedrunners are using a technique called "whistle sprinting" to keep Link moving at top speed. Whistle sprinting involves holding the D-pad down to whistle while tapping B. This allows you to keep Link sprinting while recovering stamina and saves a significant amount of time. The technique causing some controversy amongst speedrunners though is the use of amiibo. By using the Super Smash Bros. Link amiibo you can summon Epona, a technique the speedrunner in second place, Orcastraw, utilizes.

While some Redditors voiced dissent about the use of amiibo summons, the first place speedrunner, gymnast85, who doesn't use the amiibo technique in his runs, stated, "To me, it seems silly to want to get rid of a cheap piece of plastic which makes runs of this game slightly faster." Since speedrunning is all about using glitches and tricks to shave time off a game completion, I have no idea why anyone would get up in arms about using an amiibo. However, I'm not a speedrunner myself, so maybe that community has some hangups of which I'm not aware.

Gymnast86 says that his world record completion wasn't even a good run. Speedrunning Breath of the Wild is still in its infancy, and as time goes on, there will be more and more timesaving techniques discovered. While I'm more of the type to take it slow and see the scenery, I love seeing what speedrunners discover about a game in their quest to shave seconds off their overall completion time. I know I'll be keeping eyes on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's speedrunning scene to see just how short of a time someone can complete the game in the future.

Cue dipshits complaining about the game having less than an hour of content.

I've never seen someone complain that Super Mario Bros. has less than 5 minutes of game play or that Quake has less than 15 minutes

I'm 2 hours in and I've only done two shrines and still trying to not accidentally throw shit.

Trying to not accidentally throw shit is a game long experience.

Eh, you really have to hold down the weapon throw button to do it. Just rest your finger on the bow trigger instead and you'll be fine.

Is it just me, or is the button mapping weird? I wanted to change it, but it doesn't look like there is a way.

I don't want to change it because it will probably still show me the wrong thing on the tips. I thought it was sad that it shows you joycon buttons each time even when you are on a pro controller. That's basically a simple if statement, am I right? 3 lines of code!

You can swap jump and dash in the options, but I find the controls to be very Japanese with cancel and confirm buttons swapped compared to PS4/XB1.

Gotta take some skill to beat him. I accidentally walked in on him a few hours in. Got stomped. Plus if you haven't defeated the Divine Beasts you have to fight all those versions as well.

This is actually really cool. A game with limited artificial obstacles isn't something you see that much any more.

You would have to. It would be one hit kills. I don't want to watch the video yet, but how much of the video is the final battle. Has to take forever with such crappy weapons.

They said you could do it and you totally can, albeit at an extreme handicap:

      - No hearts or armor means everything one-shots you
      - No master sword means weapons are procure-on-site, and you'll need quite a few, none of which are as good
      - You have to first fight all the Divine Beast bosses that you skipped
      - Ganon has all his health due to no Divine Beasts

It's really cool that they accounted for this though, I think speedrunners will eventually get the time sub-30 minutes probably.

We're right at the beginning of this so yeah, I think they'll get it cut pretty quickly. Particularly once bugs to skip forward start showing up.

The cliff is too steep to climb down without falling to your death and you can't get any additional hearts prior so it's more like the systems are built in such a way that it will kill you if you try.

I would be surprised if nobody ever finds a way to get off the plateau without the glider. I don't see a reason for them to hard-code a kill switch, it's just a steep cliff that is designed to be too tall to get down through ordinary means.

I know you need at least one of the shrines to beat a form of Ganon. At least I did on a divine beast.

When I unlocked my paragliding I attempted to do the awesome leap from the ledge and fly down but I hit the wrong button and fell to the ground without opening the thing. I hit the ground and lived. Kind of anticlimactic.
