PlayStation 4 firmware Update 4,50 is coming tomorrow, adding numerous new features and changes to the console. Among them will be improved 2D images for PlayStation VR and voice chat for Remote Play.

In addition to custom wallpapers and external HDD support that Sony revealed last month, the update will add voice chat for PC Mac and Xperia users playing via Remote Play. The microphone will be toggled through a toolbar icon in the Remote Play app.

Also, players who come out of playing a VR game will notice higher resolutions on the system screen when displayed on your TV. " The resolution of Cinematic Mode on PS VR will improve — if your PS VR screen size is set to Small or Medium, the frame rate of content viewed in Cinematic Mode goes up from 90Hz to 120Hz with this update," PlayStation Brand Marketing VP John Koller said in a blog post

PlayStation 4 Pro will also be getting a Boost Mode to enhance performance of some older titles that have not be optimized for Pro. "This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz," Koller said. "Depending on the game, the increased CPU speed may also result in shorter load times."

He advised that Boost won't work will all titles, and that it can be turned off it needed.

A final feature mentioned is and update for the PS Messages and PS Communities apps for iOS and Android. New features include:

  • Quick messages for party invites in PS Messages, such as “I’ll join later” or “Sorry, I can’t join.”
  • Check PSN service status via View Status on the Communities app
  • The badge app icon in the Communities app for iOS users will now show how many new posts in their community.

We'll post the entire change log if Sony publishes it tomorrow.

Huh, I thought "voice shat" was what was already going on for these services.

Why wouldn't they make boost mode a per-game setting? Seems like a huge pain in the ass to have to go in to the settings to turn it on or off.

Even better but way beyond Sony's apparent capability would be for them to automatically enable and disable it based on the title you were playing.

I'm most excited for the external HDD support, as I am currently running out of space.

Same. I've got a spare 2TB external drive so this spares me the trouble and cost of replacing the internal one.
