Halo Wars 2 Physical Edition on PC Canceled in North America

PC players will still be able to find the RTS on the Windows Store.

After announcing lavish physical editions of Halo Wars 2 to be produced and distributed by THQ Nordic, Microsoft has decided to cancel the PC physical editions of the RTS in all territories except Europe. The change came about due to fluctuation in Microsoft's plans for retail stores, which the company explained in a recent blog post.

"Our retail plans have shifted and Microsoft has made the decision to focus the release of the physical retail version to Europe only," a spokesperson explained. "THQ Nordic is a great partner and they are working with us to ensure this transition remains smooth for our customers."

PC players interested in a bird's-eye view of Halo action can still purchase the game on the Windows 10 Store when Halo Wars 2 is released on February 21.

Chronologically, Halo Wars 2 takes place after Halo 5: Guardians. Shacknews editors recently got an opportunity to sample the first hour of the game.

That makes sense. The physical market is pretty much dead anyways for PC gaming.

Retail market in Europe was/is relatively big and until a few years ago PC gaming was synonymous with Europe.

One of the last places it was relevant was Germany, where 40-50% of worldwide retail sales where happening but now that platforms like steam and co have sorted their shit out in terms of payment young folks can actually buy games online.

Its weird but I guess microsoft folks probably know their audience/their own game.

          http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/07/20/develop-09-is-digital-distribution-the-pc-saviour/

"The PC market across the years went from 1.262 to 1.265 to 1.326 to 1.125 € which is a fifteen percent decline from its 2006. That's enormously held up by the German market, which now makes up 41.3% of all PC sales, and has declined by 5%. While UK is second and France is third, it's actually clear that in terms of retail, Germany is single-handedly holding up the PC market . It's the last year which has seen the biggest decline, which is where Bloch argues Digital Distribution really kicked off."

41% worldwide retail sales in Germany alone. But a 5% decline in 2009, depending on how sharp that trend followed through there is a good chance that it took a heavy it by now but I would like some data on that because bi chains here are well stocked with pc games last I checked and my guess is that Microsoft just doesn’t want to pay them their cut initially.
