Reports had begun circulating over the last few days that some Nintendo Switch pre-orders from retailers GameStop and Target had been cancelled, causing a minor panic among those who had prepaid the $299.99 retail price to get the handheld-console hybrid. While Target has yet to respond, GameStop has taken strong issue with the reports.

"GameStop has not, and is not, cancelling any Nintendo Switch pre-orders due to allocation issues," a GameStop representative told GameIndusty.biz. "We are working very closely to confirm and validate any and all pre-orders of this innovative gaming system. Should any customer who pre-ordered a Nintendo Switch console from GameStop experience any issue with their order, we encourage them to contact our Guest Care team so we can help resolve the issue."

The Nintendo Switch has been in huge demand since it was announced, getting sold out quickly at many retailers. Nintendo has promised that it will be able to meet the early demand for the console, but pre-orders have been slow to resume. The Switch is expected to launch on March 3.

"GameStop has not, and is not, cancelling any Nintendo Switch pre-orders due to allocation issues," the representative said.

I think the reason is probably the key to the story. There could be a few different reasons some orders are getting cancelled. I know in previous system launches, some retailers had limits on how many systems a person could buy. Since we're inside a month to ship, it could be that a number of retailers did an auth on the card and it was declined. You wouldn't get an auth on a card when an order is taken for a pre-order item. You'd do it before you ship it, and since most auth's are good for 30 days we're inside that window to when systems would be shipping to arrive on your doorstep on 3/3. There are other possibilities, but those are the ones that immediately sprung to mind.
