Your DNA ID Card
by Steve Gibson, Oct 15, 2000 7:28am PDTI saw this story early this morning on ZDNet and thought you guys would find it interesting. The topic is a Federal DNA Database. Basically the government having an index of your DNA identifer to authenticate who you are. Kevin Mitnick thinks we should have one! If we could really trust the government (hah!) to only use the database for that purpose, I'd agree with him, but um.... Oh and you can read the interview summary with Mr Mitnick where he mentioned that here.
I think the government has to establish some sort of central database that uses biometric identifiers, such as your DNA, that can label you as you. This might eliminate a lot of identity theft, because anyone can apply for credit by supplying information over the phone."

Nano-scrubbers. Take a nano marker that stays in your system for 24hrs. Commit a crime within that time range. Take the demarker. Release nano-scrubbers to eliminate anything that contains a trace of the nano-marker.

What do I care if someone gets my DNA info ? Its not like evidence can't be planted right now. They'd still have to prove I was there.
Same thing about the kiddy uproar when Intel was trying to add the Unique IDs to P3s. I think that would have been a really good thing. There would be a lot more accountability to peoples actions. The only reason I would be against it would be if I was doing something illegal in the first place. If marketing guys wanna track me, be my guest. What do I care ? =)
Do I trust my governemnt to handle my, and my families, most personal information? Can I be assured that DNA information would not be accessable to insurance agencies, employment background checks, criminal checks (without a warrant *see below), schools and universities, the military... ect.
*think about DNA matches in a criminal investigation. If a case is dead cold or reached an impase, law enforcement would want to run a nationwide scan for a particular DNA profile. Current DNA profiling gives a match probability of anywhere from 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 50,000,000. That means that in a country of 300 million people, odds are innocent people will become instant SUSPECTS.
Do you trust the Government to protect your information?
It is human nature to talk and share information, no matter what the circumstances are. btw- did we ever find out who stole our nuclear secrets from Los Alamos?
{best protection from Identity theft is not go give anyone, or any organization, information about yourself, including and ESPECIALLY your DNA}

This jerk is no more of an expert than that Napster guy (Shawn Fanning?), but both are now perceived as having some incredible insight in the future of technology.

As for a mark of the beast National DNA ID Card - A HASH on my DNA is just as unique, and that's all they'll ever get from me.

In that article he says something about how easy it is to get someones social security number. Uhm OK, what is going to make it harder to get someone's DNA id? It'll still be stored in some computer, no? Using it might be harder, but I'm sure scammers will get creative...
I don't really see the point of this at all.
