Nintendo Switch Online Service Prices Revealed

Nintendo President Kimishima tells Nikkei Switch online service prices.

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima has told The Nikkei that the Nintendo Switch's online service cost users 2-3000 yen per year. This price translates into USD at around $17.50 to $26.50 a year. This new comes via Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games, a Tokyo-based game industry consultancy. Toto stated that Kimishima went on to say that the yearly access fee for the Nintendo Switch online service would make it easier for Nintendo to offer continued support of online multiplayer and classic game downloads.

Kimishima also said that Nintendo is currently studying VR capabilities for the Switch. The biggest hurdle for Nintendo now is figuring out how gamers can play virtual reality on the Nintendo Switch for hours on end while still retaining the portability of the console/handheld hybrid.

While we haven't heard an official announcement from Nintendo yet, with this news in the air, we expect an official statement soon. The Nintendo Switch won't launch with this new online service. Instead, we'll get a preview of it during Summer 2017 for free, and the full service will roll out this fall.

Yeah at $20 a year that's a whopping $1.66 a month. Hard to complain much about that.

That seems pretty reasonable I think!

Makes me wonder why they even bother to charge it. Free online is a more valuable selling point than $20 a year to Nintendo I think.

$20/year * 10 milliion users is a big bump in operating profit.

Yeah... I'm not worried too much about that amount. I should probably just cancel my Xbox Live payment though because I have probably booted up my 360 twice in the past year.

The Switch is a bit more than I expected.... at least the online service is a bit less. I'm very curious if they use the account I created for the 3DS and recognize the games I've already purchased there.

do you have a Nintendo ID? I think that's the account the Switch will use. we're still waiting to hear about previously purchased VC games.

I'm kinda hoping that if you paid for it and they have it on the "free for a month" that, since it's discounted then, you can actually own it for free if you owned it prior since it would (normally...) already be discounted. We shall see though.

Wii to Wii U was a buck or to to upgrade VC games to the new VC. I really have no expectation of 3DS VC games transferring unless they're transferred (removed) from the 3DS, but I could be wrong.

The worst part about Online fees is getting casual people into games with you. There is the credit card barrier. It would be great if there was some workaround in this, such as being a per-system or per-family fee.

At this price I'll probably buy it once a year after something I want to play online comes out, like Mario Kart & Splatoon this year.

That is the thing. Yeah it's cheap but I don't play any ninetndo games online. Splatoon and Mario kart aren't my bag so I'm not sure what the point would be for someone like me.
