Shack's Arcade Corner: Spy Hunter

*Peter Gunn Theme plays*

4

Today on Shack's Arcade Corner, I look back at one of the all-time classic arcade games. Spy Hunter was an endless driving game that featured many powerups to help players evade enemies. The music was amazing for the time and has lived on in many movies and TV shows. There were two types of Spy Hunter arcade cabinets (seated and standing), both of which featured a funky looking steering wheel that resembled the controls of an airplane. The game was ported to a vast array of consoles, including the NES. There was also a mediocre attempt at rebooting the series back in the early 2000s, but nothing has really captured the fun of playing the original Spy Hunter at my local arcade.

Aw. Too bad that's not footage from the arcade version. The cars were longer in the arcade version since it used a portrait screen.

Loved that game back in the day.
Back in fith grade I got mononucleosis hepatitis, my spleen swole up huge, I was out of school for 6 weeks and my mom wood take me to the arcade after every doctor appointment and let me spend $5, most of it went to this game!

Greg, I love the arcade corner feature!

I spent a lot of money on Spy Hunter as a kid. I so desperately wanted to make it to the boat house, but never did as a kid. I think I got to it once in the NES version.

I can't get the controls to work right on mame for this; they are too sensitive and the car goes all over the place. Sometimes I turn it on though just to listen to the Peter Gunn theme :)

What's the game where you go up and up a building and badenovs pop in and out of doors to shoot at you? The music here seems very similar to what I recall of that one.
