AOL-TW Getting Blocked?
by Jack Mathews, Oct 14, 2000 10:42am PDTWell, this has absolutely nothing to do with gaming, but well, who cares, eh? This is pretty big stuff. Reuters has gotten word that the FTC may be looking to sue to block the AOL-Time Warner merger if Internet access restrictions aren't met. Here's what those wacky bastards at Reuters have to say:
Unnamed sources said negotiators for both sides have been unable to reach a deal over how the merged company would ensure that rival Internet service providers would have access to its high-speed cable network. Attorneys for the Federal Trade Commission must rule by October 27 whether to approve the merger. Sources said both sides remain far apart in their positions and a deal is unlikely by that time period.Looks to little old me like the FTC is leaking info in order to get AOL-Time Warner to concede. It's also noteworthy to mention that the EU approved the merger with provisions that they sever all links with a German media group responsible for music delivery and playing software. So what do you guys think about this little debacle?

Who built the network? Various companies that are now all parts of AOL/TW. Who owns the network? AOL/TW. Thus who, other than AOL/TW, has a right to decide how that network is used? NO ONE. The network in question is AOL/TW's ***PROPERTY*** and no one can tell them what to do with it. But of course, the FTC *IS* telling them what to do with it, and you know what that means? They don't really own it. They probably still think they do, and they by all means should, but the FTC's authoritative disrespect for that property essentially nullifies its very existence. This is really no surprise in an era where our gov't violates even our self-ownership on a daily basis...
At any rate, what I really think: AOL should be allowed to buy TW. AOL/TW should not be compelled to "open" their network in any they don't want to. If you don't like it, if the "size" of AOL/TW and their control over the media market scares you, don't be AOL/TW consumers. Yes I realize that means giving up plenty of TV, print media, and whatnot, but that's the price of a principled stand in the marketplace.
Personally, I'm not scared. *I* control my mind, not various leftist media conglomerates. And if they were to use *cough* "monopoly power" to jack up the price on my cable (which would be DUMB), there's always DSL...

:D
it caters to the needs of commerce not to the interests of society.
it'll bite us in the ass.
in europe it is already biting us: labour shortage and bad state of healthcare, education and safety.
commerce is a part of society, it shouldn't rule everything.
which German media group is that?
