The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Takes Up Half of The Nintendo Switch's Internal Storage

The digital version of Breath of the Wild has a hefty download size.

The Nintendo Switch is launching with 32 GB of internal storage, and just one launch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is poised to take up around half of that. Breath of the Wild's digital version will require 13.4 GB of storage space, which doesn't leave a lot left over for other titles.

Luckily, the Nintendo Switch is compatible with microSDXC cards, so you can easily expand the system's storage. However, needing the additional storage upon purchase just adds to the total cost of the Switch. Considering that there's no pack-in game, and certain essential accessories are sold separately, it's disheartening that you have to add a microSD card to the tally.

For those that opt to purchase the physical version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it seems the Nintendo Switch can run the game from the cartridge with no need for an internal installation. It looks like the Nintendo Switch is repeating the standard set by the Wii U, which launched in 8 GB and 32 GB models and almost immediately needed expanded storage for games.

Also there's the OS itself, and we don't know yet how much that will take. But it seems safe to assume there won't be 32 gigs available to start with.

yah seems like this console you'll be better off buying physical copies... if you try to go the digital route it seems like you'd need to likely buy a few Micro SD cards to hold your library anyway.

Not just that, but there are pre-order discounts from Amazon and Best Buy, so carts will end up being cheaper, even if you have to juggle a pile of them in the end.

I'm kinda torn on this. I wrestled with this on my kids LeapPad. The carts were cheaper, but then she would lose a few. But, the digital copies never went on sale. Well, the licensed character ones didn't.

If it'll take a fat 256gb sd card and can use the speed of a fast card... IDK Still torn between easy of use with digital and being able to get physical ones 20% off if you preorder. Might depend on how many games I end up actually buying.

Well, this gives me an easy way to add a new sku either by holiday or next year - just bump up the ram for $50. As long as the sd reader/controller doesn't have any issues with fast cards, and doesn't cause the cards to crap out (which I've had on my phones), oh and as long as there are NO restrictions on putting any game on the card (which I hear there aren't on DS/Wii U), then this shouldn't be too much of an issue. But, DS/Wii U types that use the cards, please speak up.

And, still waiting to hear if they're going to allow multiple Switch ownership per account.

I could see us have 2, and 3 eventually, in the family. It would be nice to only have to buy a multiplayer game once for the family to use. I know Nintendo doesn't support that right now, but they're going to have to make changes to their internet and account support for Switch, so I'm hoping it might happen.

      It won't.

I hope so too. My wife and I played through so many digital games together on PS3 because she could download a game from my account on her system, then switch over to her account and play. I'd join in from my account on our other PS3.

Actually, this is something she and I have discussed in the context of the Switch. I told her that if what I described works, we should get two Switches so we can play Mario Kart and (fingers crossed) the Dark Souls collection together.

Said this in the other thread, buy physical Zelda, then digital after that and then based on storage demand buy SD.

No way to know how big games will be just because one game is 12gb
