3dfx Still Hurting
by Steve Gibson, Oct 12, 2000 8:32pm PDTAyeee... 3dfx isnt having a good time lately. If you remember last quarters results they lost 100.5 million bucks. They blamed it on a shortage I believe. Well they just put out another warning for this quarter.
...earnings for the three months ending October 31, 2000, to be substantially below the Company's previous expectations. The anticipated shortfall is primarily due to overall softness in the European retail and system integrator channels.3dfx also just recently lost their PR guy to NVidia, Brian Burke. Thanks Travis Yoes

I got a Geforce DDR last December (just when they came out over here) and we had a Lan between Xmas and New Year. People could not believe the speed of the card at the time.
Ok so UT didn't run that well but it was playable. What was the selling point of the card? Q3 in 32 bit colour. People looked at it and their jaws dropped.
That was what killed Voodoo cards from a gamers point of view, ATI still controlled the OEM market at the time and the prebuilt market (Compaq, IBM desktops and servers) so 3dfx couldn't get in their. They were ahead of the game at one point and stopped running.
Weren't Nintendo once in a similar position? I could think of others Commordore (?) springs to mind immediately.
What Nvidia has to do next is to bring full hardware decoding of DVD's onto their chipset as well as making it faster, more light sources, etc than the GTS Ultra and I'd say they were on a winner.
I still run the DDR I get 100 FPS on Q3 with everything on @ 800x600, it's a great card. Hell I still have a TNT in the server that people can play on. It's not great but it's playable and how old is that?
I hope Rampage is everything it is meant to be cause it will mean a better deal for us, the customers.
However, when your marketing guy goes to work for the opposition that tends to answer a few things about your product line.
Maybe the Bitmap Brothers can teach 3dfx a few things? (and that's a joke btw).

It will someday be worth more than the whole fucking company at the rate 3dfx's stock price is falling...
Speaking of which, if that shit gets any lower I'm gonna buy a buttload of 3dfx stock and hope that 3dfx can pull a rabbit out of Gigapixels ass. No risk = no reward.

1) tried to make the graphics chipset for sega (dreamcast) but got screwed over in favor of powervr (lot of time wasted there)
2)that crappy voodoo card that had its 2d on a daughter card (cant remember what it was called... anyone?)
3) OpenGl driver? we have mini drivers, they are better
4) were selling too many voodoo chipsets to 3rd party manufactures, we should just buy STB because they were Nvidia's biggest OEM manufacturer so we can screw Nvidia & make our own cards at the same time
5) lets waste alot of money to change 3DFX to 3Dfx and add an orange nike swoosh to our logo, then lets waste alot of money on tv ads
6) voodoo3? it only has to be as fast as 2 voodoo2s & have 2d on it that works
7) Voodoo3 w/ special flatpannel out port.. oh wait scratch that we dumb we cant make it, lets just try and make it like an ati-all in wonder
8) lets make the voodoo5 using .25 manufacturing and huge ass pc boards so it requires an external powersupply, instead of making the chip smaller
can anyone think of any others?

3dfx Announces Anticipated Revenue Shortfall Due to Overall Weakness In European Market
R-O-F-L. That didn't work for Intel, either.
Try "Due to the weakness of our motherfuckin' products."

Its the kind of strategic mistake that many high tech companies never recover from... (kinda like when Apple forged ahead with the 'closed' archatecture and *IBM, Compaq, ect* went with the 'open')
{so long ago I forgot the name of that 'Industry Constortum' }
