Majesco Entertainment Closes Its Doors Forever

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Majesco Entertainment has merged with PolarityTE, a tissue regeneration technology firm, and closed its doors. PolarityTE is in fact a "wholly-owned subsidiery" of Majesco, even though the combined firm will be operating under the Polarity name.

Majesco opened in 1986 and was a distributor of games that had been abandoned by their original publisher. It later arranged the rights to manufacture games for Nintendo and Sega, and went on to produce the Genesis 3. In the early 2000's Majesco began in-house game development and made games for GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Xbox, PlayStation 2. It also published notable games like BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2, Psychonauts, and Advent Rising.

In the mid-2000's, suffering from budget issues, Majesco turned to the casual gaming scene and concentrated on games like Cooking Mama and Kinect-compatible titles. Majesco never quite got out of the financial slump it entered during this time and by August of last year they had reduced their workforce to five employees. Majesco's final games were an HD port of WayForward's A Boy and His Blob and a console version of Gone Home which were released by Majesco's internal Midnight City indie label.

Majesco Entertainment wasn't ever lauded with the love and fandom that many of its contemporaries received. However, it was a company that launched in the years when video gaming began rising to the global pastime it is today. Without Majesco leading the way for other companies to get into the video gaming industry, the scene might have turned out very differently.
