Mass Effect Andromeda's multiplayer mode will tie into single-player

Teams can be sent on side missions, or the player can complete them in mutiplayer.

More and more details are coming out on Mass Effect Andromeda, leading up to a game play reveal this week at The Game Awards 2016 and its eventual release sometime in March. Late last week we learned about side missions in the single-player campaign, but now we find out that those side missions may be tied in to the multiplayer.

The team at BioWare confirmed to GameInformer that there is a connection between the two, but didn't offer too much explanation on how the multiplayer would actually tie in to the single-player campaign. However, there were some tidbits offered. Lead Designer Brian Frazier said that funds earned in multiplayer would have "tendrils going out into the rest of the game," while producer Fabrice Condominas said that teams can be sent on side missions, or the player could do it in multiplayer. Frazier also added that multiplayer is not essential to the experience. “If you feel cheated, we’ve done something wrong,” he said.

The multiplayer mode will have many of the same mechanics as were found in Mass Effect 3, but with some key changes to things such as less grinding via loot packs sold in the store, prestige experience gained at the same time as regular XP, and the added dimension of verticality provided by the jetpack.

BioWare has confirmed that Andromeda will be its biggest game to date, which is a pretty tall task considering that they have also revealed that all of the races from the previous trilogy will not make an appearance in the new game. "We've designed the IP in such a way that they can all show up," creative director Mac Walters told GameInformer. "For hopefully obvious reasons, they're not all going to show up in the first game."

Grind in multiplayer to get an extra colour choice in the ending!

For fuck's sake. They better keep that shit minimal and optional. I didn't like ME3 MP at all, and having to play it to fully appreciate the SP game was a totally bummer.

            No kidding, right??

I'm actually very excited for ME:A MP that takes what it seemed like they were trying to do with DAI conceptually and makes it better.

they will 100% for sure make the tie in better - the galactic readiness meter thingy was a little weird, but I can totally see what they were going for. having to play MP to influence the SP ending is weird, but if they can do it well..... O M F G

The integration into the wider conflict just never worked for me in DAI. I love the thought of sending my MP team off on missions and being able to play MP matches that affect friends' away teams' results.

oh man - totally. TOTALLYYYYYYY. like assassins creed where you send off your folks on missions? if we can do that in ME:A it's an instant preorder.

some MP overlays with other folks' MP games and such would be fucking fun as hell.

maybe... submit one of your crew to be part of their MP squad while you play SP? omfg.

Yes, the missions from Brotherhood where you send your apprentices off are basically confirmed for ME:A, IIRC. I think you can either let them do their percentage-based thing or play MP to affect the outcome, but I can't remember where I got that impression from.

I have faith because the MP team went back in and changed tech bursts to work exactly like biotic combos, at least in MP.

I do like playing Hatesurf Batarian Soldier. Dat Punch is so satisfying, even if it could stand to do more damage.

I just don't get it, at all. I feel like the combat in the game is passable, and wanting to play a ton of that without the added context of story and characters just seems like madness.

That's where we differ. I fucking loved the combat in ME3. I played MP for 1260 hours. That is in-game MP time only; not menus, lobbies, etc. Actual playtime.

Did you play other games? Even games I love I don't put that kind of time into, because it means missing out on too many other titles.

No. I tend to find one thing I like and beat it to death. I bought Destiny on Xbone about this time last year:

                13d 21h 7m

I bought it on PS4 in the spring:

                5d 5h 58m

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think he's referring to the galaxy score bullshit that was used to force folks into MP. Early on it was simply impossible to get a high enough score with the default assets in the game unless you played MP.

Though with max assets it only took like, a hour to breach the score required. Still, it was annoying.

Yeah. Don't lock single player stuff away behind mp. Not everyone want to play multiplayer, or maybe it's a year or two later and the servers are dead.

That being said, I personally did enjoy the ME3 mp. Which is rare for me. But even then I hated that it had any bearing on the sp campaign.

Sure, eventually they patched out the requirement.

After, what, months of perceptually forced engagement with other items that could lead to conversions? Like with their blind box multiplayer item store that whales could endlessly dump money into. I'm sure that's entirely unrelated though.

Just a dumb mistake that they fixed.

Yep, regardless of its quality, forcing people to play the multiplayer to gain access to more single player content is incredibly obnoxious.

Well that makes this go from an insta-pre-order for me to a "wait and see how fucked up it is at launch".

With all the games that throw MP in that crash and burn at launch under load and have errors, timeouts, or crashes because servers can't be accessed which may make SP unplayable I'm not going to take a chance. That's a damn shame.

Awesome. I absolutely loved me3 mp.

It was so fun with friends but partly because it was ME universe. But I think they did a great job. Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

Are they... not acknowledging that this is exactly what they did in ME3? That I didn't get the "best" ending because I didn't play the multiplayer?

As miserable as Destiny has ever made me, the final 30-40 minutes of Mass Effect 3 are so much worse.

I am lucky in that the multiplayer never grabbed me, and horde mode generally does not do it for me so I can skip this. I hope you have fun with it though!
