One of the big reveals for Diablo 3 fans at BlizzCon 2016 this year was that the original Diablo was being remade in Diablo 3, and would be available on the public test realm soon after the convention had concluded. Well, The Darkening of Tristram event has officially begun.

The dev team has released the full PTR patch notes, including how players can get into the 16-level dungeon to take on the four bosses from the original game. "A mysterious group of Cultists is stirring up trouble! Hunt them down in Adventure Mode to uncover clues that reveal a portal into Tristram’s past, and rediscover the terrifying darkness that took hold of the town so many years ago," the description reads.

Apparently there will be a lot of testing going on since the notes say that the event will launch on the live servers in January and be an event for that month only. In addition, there is an event that will be required to be completed before players cnan actually dive into the dungeon.

While players can expect to see many of the same monsters from the original, it appears that the levels are pulling from current Diablo 3 tilesets with a blurry filter applied. So if you are expecting a remaster, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a homage and a bit of nostalgia, then you should enjoy it.

Of course, this is the PTR, and things aren't set until it makes it to the live servers in January. So enjoy it and tell us what you think.
