Aldie @ 3D Realms

by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 09, 2000 4:21pm PDT

The 3D Realms website has been updated with info on the new Duke4 programmer who was announced a few days ago, Scott Alden. Scott previously worked at 3dfx and Ritual Entertainment, where he worked on SiN and Heavy Metal: FAKK2. Scott will be working on the multiplayer side of things for the Duke Nukem Forever project. Since they still look so good, how about some Duke4 screenshots

It was a tough decision for me to leave Ritual Entertainment, and I have had a great 3 years working there. I'm really looking forward to get started on the Duke 4 multiplayer code, but it looks like I'll have to study this Unreal code a bit before I jump in. It's kind of a shock to be working with Quake tech for 3 years, and then jump over and work o Unreal. Well at least I get to see how both systems really work.

  • I sense a Christmas 2001 release at the very latest.

I know you guys are harpin' that it'll never be released. From what I've seen of the screenshots that were released a long time ago the single player side of things should be pretty close to being finished.

As far as the weapons being added to the game; that'd take what, two or three months to decide on, create and balance? And if all 3DR is doing now is that, plus the multiplayer code (separate from single player code?), and possibly tweaking the single player experience...

I think this game is going to own me as much as Half-life did when it came out. I believe DNF will up the bar even more; force some changes to Doom3 and even Half-Life 2. Just because they haven't pulled a Romero and arrogantly made statements like 'DNF will make you our bitch' doesn't mean they aren't working. Fact, I'd look at the silence from 3DR to say that they were too busy working to make any statements like that.

Let the game be it's judge. In the meantime, I might suggest that perhaps 3DR do something like release a small 5MB movie of gameplay? Please? Pretty please? Just a small taste?
