Cyber Ethics Education!

by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 09, 2000 2:35pm PDT

What do you do when you have all these script kiddies doing some digital vandalism? You introduce cyber ethics education. The FBI is spreading the word to parents and teachers that they need to teach children that vandalism in cyberspace is just as wrong as in real life. The US Justice Department and the IT Association of America are even starting seminars so that teachers can get up to date on the latest in internet crime. According to the article, it almost looks like all the Internet using kids are criminals, be it because of hacking or downloading mp3s. We play violent videogames, we download mp3s and we listen to bad music, oh my what is wrong with us.

  • I hope this "cyber ethics education" turns out to be more helpful than Fatal1ty's Q3 deathmatch tips. Otherwise, it'll look something like this:

-- Just stand in the corner of the chat room, spamming over and over and over again, "I won't take part in this hacker stuff!"

-- Grab a stack of government Cyber Ethics 4-U Handouts (Government Publication No. 17,365,728) and just throw, like, handfuls of them at hackers

But seriously. Instead of anti-hacker propaganda, we should be teaching kids that our corporate-run government is in serious need of reform if it is ever to more closely resemble, let alone become, a democratic republic. It just might be that hacking, which encourages a questioning and noncomplacent mindset, is one route toward not being a dupe. Instead of marching to the Man's drum, I say: find out which teacher is burdened with the soul-deadening job of reciting this lame ass crap to the class...and hack his computer! :)
