Watch BlizzCon 2016's opening ceremonies right here (Update)

You can also watch all the eSports streams for free. Everything else requires the virtual ticket.

Update: It appears the opening ceremonies and all the sports streams will be free. Developer panels and all main stage presentations will be with the virtual ticket. BlizzCon.com, Twitch and MLG.TV will all have the free streams. We apologize for the error.

Original Story (fixed and updated): BlizzCon 2016 kicks off today in Anaheim, CA, and many of us are not lucky enough to be able to attend. But you can watch a lot of the events including the opening ceremonies right from the comfort of your own home right here.

Blizzard is streaming opening ceremonies for free, but viewers who paid $40 for a Virtual Ticket will get many of the panels and and some in-game goodies.

The events kick off with World of Warcraft Arena championships at 9 a.m. PT / noon ET, but the big event today will be the opening remarks by Blizzard CEO Mike Morheim and reveals from the various project leads. Those begin today at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET. After that, the convention will devolve into smaller panels for each of the company's six franchises, and only seen through the virtual ticket.

What do we expect?

  • Diablo 4, and expansion or a Diablo 2 HD edition are a good bet, given the 20th anniversary of the franchise.
  • StarCraft 2's Nova Covert Ops missions are wrapping up, so possibly a new set of missions may be announced.
  • World of Warcraft Legion has done extremely well, so updates on a new patch and maybe even a new expansion announcement could happen.
  • Hearthstone recently launched Karazhan, but has been getting hints of something surrounding Gadgetzan, so a new expansion is likely.
  • Overwatch has been hugely successful, so a Sombra reveal and news of the next step in the story could be forthcoming.
  • Heroes of the Storm has been getting new heroes on a regular basis, but nothing has leaked, so anything is possible.

Also, the World of Warcraft movie, despite it's tepid reception in North America, has been a huge hit in China, so maybe Duncan Jones has a tease on a sequel he wants to share. And Weird Al will be there, so that is definitely a plus.

It's all speculation at this point. If you can't watch the opening ceremonies, then watch our news stream as all of us will be watching an posting news as it happens.

I want both and need both a HD D2 in their new Diablo engine(D3 engine upgraded into DX11/12) would be insane.

Also of course get the ball rolling on D4 would be epic too.

Heck why not pump out the expansion pack with the necromancer if its real while HD D2 is getting ready to drop.

        Release schedule:

        - D3 necromancer expansion [ this year Dec 2016 ]
        - HD D2 remake [ next year 2017 ]
        - D4 [ 2018 ]

        Wouldn't hat be amazing!

Same, its one of my favorites in the ARPG genera, the Diablo franchise just owns, you can never have to much of Diablo. I want Diablo hooked up to a intravenous 24/7 into my gaming veins.

Not sure this is 100% correct. The Blizzcon website states you can stream live for free at Blizzcon site, Twitch or MLG.tv

Yeah, it looks like the virtual ticket gets you virtual goodies and access to limited things like developer panels and the costume contest. The opening and the tournaments seem to be free access

I think those fall under the "developer panels" that require a virtual ticket

"Join Blizzard developers for in-depth panels on World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch—order a Virtual Ticket to watch the panels on the Main and Panel stages both days of the show."

The free streams are the Opening Ceremony. And all of the Esports championships.

Main and side stages for anything other than those things are only part of the Virtual Ticket. So for example the Hearthstone Expansion announcement/trailer will be on the free stream because it is part of the opening ceremony, but the card breakdown panel will only be on paid Virtual Ticket.

We're way overdue for some kind of Warcraft love. I'd love a War4 before D4 I think.

I don't know if they're going to go back to RTS games after this. SC2 sort of fizzled out. And Warcraft is an RPG franchise at this point, War3 is 14 years old.

          Things revealed about Sombra:

          - Stealth + SMG
          - Can place a recall point and teleport back there later
          - Able to hack "abilities". Probably turret sapping, not clear what it means for normal characters - my guess is she can shut down all of a player's abilities for a short time.

Also, they announced an Arcade mode which sounds like a collection of minigames/side modes/etc. Will have 1v1 and 3v3 modes with a new map. Seems a likely destination for stuff like Lucioball and co-op.
