Activision says Destiny 2 will 'broaden the appeal' of the franchise

The publisher is sticking to 2017 as a broad release window.

During today's earnings report in which Activision Blizzard reported an increase in profit and revenue, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg spoke to the publisher's plans for Destiny 2 (via GameSpot).

"We're on track and really excited for what we think is going to be an awesome sequel for Destiny in 2017," he said in response to a question from an analyst regarding Destiny. "That sequel is designed to both excite our highly engaged current players but also to broaden the appeal even further, bringing in new fans and bringing back lapsed fans."

Activision wants to bring in millions of new players to Destiny 2. One way to do that, while also entertaining long-time players, is to do a better job releasing content—an area of 2014's Destiny where Hirshberg feels both Bungie and Activision could have done better.

"In the past, I've mentioned that the incredible demand for Destiny content has somewhat outpaced our ability to deliver upon that demand. Going forward, along with our partners at Bungie, we've put together what we believe is a very smart approach that will allow us to deliver that steady stream of great content to keep our players engaged and keep the universe alive and growing in the wake of that sequel."

Although Hirshberg declined to nail down a more specific release window for Destiny 2 other than a vague "2017," his belief that the sequel will broaden Destiny's appeal could be connected to rumors concerning the game coming to PC, a platform that hosts tens of millions of players.

Yeah, I hated it on PS4, but that was mostly because I don't like playing shooters with a controller. I would check it out on PC.

I don't hate it on PS4, but yeah, shooters are way better on the PC

Hopefully "broaden the appeal" means "bring to pc" and not "dumb it down". The cynic in me says it's more likely the second thing.
