Nintendo says Switch is a home console 'first and foremost,' not necessarily successor to 3DS

The Wii U will become scarce as the Switch's March 2017 launch nears.

In an interview with Polygon, a Nintendo representative clarified that it thinks of its upcoming Switch console—previously codenamed the "NX"—as a home gaming system first and foremost, and that it will continue to support 3DS handhelds

"Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost. We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS. “Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there’s still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. There are many more games in the pipeline."

On the other hand, the Wii U will become scarce as the Switch's March 2017 launch nears.

"We have nothing to announce about the production status of Wii U," Nintendo told Polygon. "We announced in April 2016 that as we prepare for the launch of Nintendo Switch in March of 2017, Nintendo will ship 800,000 Wii U hardware units to the global market for this fiscal year. As a result, the inventory of Wii U hardware at retail will become harder to find. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability."

Nintendo announced Switch, a console/handheld hybrid, this morning.

Also, I kinda don't buy it. I expect portable mode will end being what most users play, but it could also really depend on the games. I only say portable because adoption of mobile gaming has exploded, and I believe out paces traditional console gaming now. But, I'm not sure what the right way to measure that would be. Switch games are naturally going to be $60 MSRP, so that'll put it outside the realm of mobile games. I can't see them going $40 like for DS titles. That'll weaken this very stance that this is a home system "first and foremost."

Yup. TONS of questions left to be answered.

Hmm I bet there will be a big variance in price actually, especially on the eShop. We already have some of that even without the two systems being combined.

and yet their reveal trailer must've been like half or more of examples using it as a portable

      • reply
        October 20, 2016 1:59 PM

Yeah, their statement seems like a way to pacify 3DS owners who took a look at that trailer and got up to dump their gear at GameStop.

Another interpretation: "Switch won't succeed 3DS now; we'll continue to support it until we don't." Kind of like how MS and Sony didn't cut ties to 360 and PS3 until late 2014-ish.

        • reply
          October 20, 2016 2:02 PM

yeah I think the 360/PS3 comparison is probably good. I'd have to go look at the data for how well the DS fared post 3DS and whether that's a realistic comparison point.

Also Nintendo hedges their bets. When the DS launched they said it wasn't a successor to the GBA, but it obviously was once it was a success. They said the Virtual Boy wasn't a successor to the Game Boy and when it tanked they had a way out.

Man I kinda miss the days of crazy hardware and in a way this Nintendo Switch thing is basically crazy hardware. I love it.

My take? The Switch is going to be pretty expensive so the 3DS needs to remain as a cheaper alternative.

Well 3ds games will probably be a good deal cheaper than Switch games for the most part. I don't think Nintendo or other developers would relish selling console games for $30 or whatever the 3ds games go for these days.

Maybe it's just me but all the other games they showed (Skyrim, MK, Splatoon) looked solid on the portable.

An odd choice to show off an unfinished game with frame rate issues but I guess you could give them credit for not doing a "screen images simulated" thing.

I still want a Wii-U, I wont pay anything more than 250.00 for the Wii-U and I feel the value of the new console is about 275.00 or so. If it hit that price point I'd skip the Wii-U and get the NX.

Also, I'd guess $250 for a base package and a $300 or $350 bundle with a dock, a game, maybe more internal storage, etc. Have an inexpensive base model and high margin add-ons for the whole deal, standard.

The switch seems positively huge for children and a ds is probably way more robust and battery will hold longer. I can see them coexist with some adjusted pricing until a new 3ds down the line maybe.

So they're continuing to produce two distinct lines of portable systems with incompatible games? It doesn't make sense. The demographic of kids not yet capable of holding normal size controllers is too small for them to worry about.

            October 21, 2016 2:37 AM

The 3DS is dead after March 2017, guaranteed. They're betting big on Switch and going to give it everything they've got, part of its point is to unify the currently split development focus on one device so they can make more games instead of wasting time porting or making games for one of two devices.

      • reply
        October 21, 2016 6:47 AM

Well Nintendo can afford to hedge their bets. If the Switch has no impact on 3ds sales then there's no problem keeping the 3ds alive. If not, they can quickly retire the 3ds and rejoice that they're the only company that was able to topple the Nintendo handheld market...with a console.

      October 20, 2016 10:56 PM

Pshaw. Nintendo is consolidating its two lines. It's a conservative move.

A gorgeous, exciting and possibly profitable move. But a conservative one.

That's an odd way to look at it. You could also say that no one has tried to combine portable and home systems like this, and it is innovative instead of conservative.

          October 21, 2016 9:22 AM

          Conceptually, you could be both.

When the DS launched, Nintendo announced that it wasn't killing off the gameboy -- the DS was for "older gamers", and the Gameboy for kids.

In practice, the DS supplanted the Gameboy. I am sure many people in the company knew this. Nintendo has to believe certain things in order to move forward. There are internal politics and a very, very old guard running at NOJ.

Two more details: Nintendo won't yet confirm either way about it being a touch screen:

      http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-10-21-nintendo-refuses-to-say-whether-switch-has-a-touchscreen

The dock is just for video output and power (although it's still possible it will clock frequencies up a bit while plugged in):

Well, yes. You can see their conundrum though - it would enable DS/3DS Virtual Console stuff, but you can't use the touch screen while docked.

Touchscreens don't work for multiplayer either, they seem to be stressing the two controllers for that.

There is speculation going around that the bridge between the two joy-cons could have a touch screen ability similar to the ps4 controller, that would allow for touchscreen when the made unit is docked.

Also there is a japanese journalist who writes for the WSJ that says there is a big aspect of the system not yet revealed pertaining to smartphones.

My best guess is an official cradle of some sort for iphones that allows this kind of setup :
