'Nintendo Switch' is the new name for Nintendo's NX

Nintendo took the wraps off its NX today, with a first trailer and a new name.

Nintendo took the wraps off of the NX today, now dubbed the "Nintendo Switch."

As expected, the Switch is a tablet-like device with detachable controllers and a home hub. The trailer shows the controllers attaching together for traditional control, or being turned sideways similar to a Wii controller, along with a presumably optional "Pro" controller. It also teased a number of games, from Skyrim and Splatoon to a brief glimpse of a new Mario game. The trailer also shows that as reported, it will use cartridges.

Nvidia issued an announcement that it will run on a custom Tegra processor. Plus, the trailer reaffirmed a launch date of March 2017.

In an accompanying press release, Nintendo detailed the "Nintendo Switch Dock" that connects with a TV. Removing it from the dock turns it to portable mode, with detachable "Joy-Con" controllers. The controllers have several configurations: one player can hold them in each hand, or docked to the screen, or slipped into a Grip accessory to mirror a traditional controller. Or, two players can each take one controller. Multiple Switch systems can also be brought together for local multiplayer.

Nintendo promised support from a large list of publishers, including Activision, 505, Bandai Namco, Bethesda, EA, Epic, Konami, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Telltale, and Warner Bros.

The press release conspicuously does not mention a touch screen, though, and we saw no touch screen functionality in the trailer, so Nintendo may be leaving that Wii U and DS/3DS feature behind with this new hardware.

... Tegra? So this is going to be less powerful than the current WiiU?

This has been mostly confirmed when Nvidia dropped the tablet refresh a few months back. That refresh would have used the pascal update to the tegra chip. I want to say the pascal tegra chip has been compared to ps3 level graphics. That certainly wouldn't suck in a handheld device, or even on a tv @ 1080p. The frame rates on the trailer didn't feel 60fps though.

I dont think you can really get a 'feel' for the framerate when they dont even show the games directly just on a screen in the video@24fps

How dare you tell me what I can feel! I reject your reality and substitute my own.
