PSA: XCOM 2, formerly exclusive to PC, is out now on Xbox One and PS4

Turns out the sequel to a multiplatform game plays and runs just fine on consoles, too. Go figure.

You can now purchase XCOM 2 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game's season pass, Reinforcement Pack, adds more units and missions and is available for $25.

Firaxis intended to keep XCOM 2 on PC, optimizing the game for the platform where the franchise began back in 1994. Fan reception convinced creative director Jake Solomon and his team to rethink their stance. "The incredible reception of XCOM 2 has been rewarding and humbling for the team, and we’ve known console fans have been clamoring to play the game too. As avid console players ourselves, we’re excited to work with The Workshop to bring XCOM 2 to all of our fans."

Firaxis teamed up with developer The Workshop to port XCOM 2 to Xbox One and PS4. If you feel ready to go all-in, you can purchase a digital deluxe version of the game for $75.

Shacknews' editor Josh Hawkins enjoyed XCOM 2 when he reviewed the PC version earlier this year. "In many ways, XCOM 2 is more of what we already enjoyed in the recent reboot, with a few considerable improvements. The new units liven up the experience and add much more variety, while the procedurally generated maps help to customize every player’s experience into a one of a kind novelty. If you’re a newcomer to the resistance or an old veteran, XCOM 2 is a smartly designed action-strategy game with a staggering amount of content and replayability."

I gave it 14 hours before I quit. I did not like the timed bullshit. Even with mods you couldn't eliminate certain timed aspects. I fucking HATE playing XCOM games with a rambo mentality. I like to go slow and steady. Nope can't have that in XCOM2. I also had a problem with the fog of war mechanics where if one guy spotted my movement he would then rush around and alert 2-4 more enemies and get first crack at me EVERY FUCKING TIME. It's as if the enemy this time was on perma overwatch and got free movements ON YOUR TURN. Fuck that bullshit

Yeah, I really dug it for similar reasons. If I wanted more XCOM I could always just play Long War instead. Glad they had a slightly different approach with the sequel to set it apart, it was brutal up front but once I got some squad upgrades and researched some new tech and weapons I was finishing most of them with plenty of turns to spare. My only real complaint about that stuff is that they had too many random turn limited missions. There were a few story missions where you could just take your time and move slowly and overwatch creep, but they also had more enemies on larger maps to deal with.

I wish they could have mixed it up a bit more and had more random missions of varying types and difficulties with more enemies (numbers and types), along with other victory conditions beyond just beating objective within the turn countdown. Not sure how they could do that or what that would be.

It would have been nice to have an option to scale it up or down along with difficulty.

So sorry the game challenged you to stop employing the same rote tactics from prior games.

Mods do remove timers if you didn't like that, honestly they were pretty generous, at least on default difficulty

What you just described was the worst part of xcom 1. Move forward 3 squares.<all soldier overwatcht>. Move forward 2 squares <all soldier overwatch>. Etc. Etc. Etc. Snore. Are you sure turn based games are for you?

XCOM1 was fundamentally broken for having basically no systems to ever make you do anything but 1 move + overwatch every single turn. There was a single optimal strategy to proceed starting from the first to the last mission.

I didn't like timed missions in the first game so I guess the second game is not for me at all.

            I'm looking forward to: http://www.xenonauts2.com/

I haven't even bought XCOM 2 yet. I held off due to complaints about performance and the knowledge that every Firaxis game gets a DLC that either properly finishes or vastly improves upon the game.

Yeah the AI was pretty bad in the games; they tried to cover it up by what you mention here, but it had no depth at all. just stood around until you spotted and then went overwatch

I dislike how authoritatively you say that. You know how many people disagree with you on this, it's fine if you didn't like it but most others did.

What? How dare you suggest a PC game be played with gamepad! That's heresy! PC games can only be played with mouse and keyboard because PC gamers have been telling us it is superior in every way! Go play XCOM 2 on a console if you love your gamepad so much you console gamer you.
