Battlefield 1 Open Beta became 'the biggest beta in EA's history'

EA has held a lot of betas, but Battlefield 1 has now become its biggest beta in the publisher's history.

EA and DICE have revealed some interesting information regarding its Battlefield 1 Open Beta, which they report turned out to be “the biggest beta in EA’s history.”

According to EA, a total of 13.2 million players participated in the Battlefield 1 Open Beta with the most popular class deployed going to the Assault class. The least popular? Medic. We guess Battlefield players don’t care about helping out their teammates as much as they care about murdering countless enemies.

Speaking of murder, Battlefield 1 Open Beta participants achieved 28.9 million melee kills, 13 million kills while riding the Armored Train, 23.8 million kills while behind the wheel of a vehicle, and 62.2 million kills while riding a horse. Unfortunately, how many digital horses were harmed as a result were not shared.

EA will be taking all of player feedback into consideration by identifying what worked well, and what didn’t. As a result, the publisher will be sharing more details soon in regards to the changes it will be making to the full version of the game, which will include tweaks to the Light Tank.

Battlefield 1 is scheduled to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 13.

Does the size of a beta actually translate into sales? (I ask knowing it is possible no one really has the numbers on this other than the publishers).

Probably not, but it seems like a lot of Shackers enjoyed the beta enough to buy the game.

Oh certainly. I just keep hearing people on the dwindling Battleborn forum talk about the 2 million people in the beta and I wondered what this meant at all. I keep feeling like many people don't use it as a demo so much as their entire expected experience with a game. They play it for a week, get their fill, and never get the urge to try it again.

Betas are basically demos now. There is so little time before the games go to market and the betas that it isn't like Qtest where id actually listened to user feedback to improve the game.

I agree. I think my question was more if they are being used as free games. Like it is a free weekend with BF1, but no sale or purchase available other than pre-order. I just feel like these numbers reflect more people who are going for the "free to play" moment than actual enthusiasm for the game lately.

I get why marketing would push these numbers, but the disconnect seems likely.

Yeah it would be interesting to see how that translates. But definitely shows that there is a lot of initial interest.

I played the beta and really didn't like it. While I would like to have been able to give the planes a shot, the rest of the game felt really clunky. While I understand it's a Beta, it felt really amateur, almost like a Battlefield knockoff.

The movement was sluggish, targeting seemed pretty spammy, etc.

Definitely give it a shot for yourself, but it's certainly not a day1 game for me.
