Xbox One outsold PS4, but 3DS was the best-selling system in July

Nintendo's handheld got a nice boost from Monster Hunter and Pokémon.

Pokémon Go is exclusive to mobile devices—unless rumors of Nintendo's upcoming NX console supporting its mobile games pans out—but that helped carry the 3DS to profitable sales during the month of July.

According to NPD Group (via Business Wire), Nintendo 3DS outsold all other platforms in terms of both hardware and software during the month of July. "The strong performance is in part thanks to the release of the Monster Hunter Generations game, continued momentum from the price drop of the Nintendo 2DS system and widespread positive public reception for the Pokémon GO mobile app, which has renewed interest in core Pokémon games on Nintendo systems," per Business Wire.

Nintendo sold 80 percent more 3DS and 2DS consoles compared to this time last year. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Red, which launched in 2014, also sold 80 percent more relative to July 2015. Meanwhile, sales of Pokémon X and Y jumped in sales by 200 percent, finishing at 16th and 22nd on July's list of top sellers, respectively.

Although NPD Group won't release full sales data until August 22, this provides further clarification to earlier reports that Microsoft's Xbox One hardware outsold PS4. In that same report, Microsoft claimed that Xbox One was the best-selling console of the month, but Nintendo had not disclosed sales figures at that time.
