It's been awhile since we heard anything about the reboot of Master of Orion from Wargaming, which purchased the franchise from Atari at a backruptcy auction in 2013. But finally, it looks like the popular 4X game is in the home stretch, getting a release date of August 25.

“The journey for Master of Orion’s reboot has been an amazing one, and now we’ve approached our destination,” Jacob Beucler, product director for the game, said in a release. “Along for the ride was the Master of Orion community, sharing their thoughts and guiding us toward an amazing Master of Orion experience for the new age.”

The standard game will sell for $29.99, while a Collector's Edition will sell for $49.99. The CE will include an art book, full soundtrack, the original three Master of Orion games, some retro pixel ship skins, and a race designed specifically for the CE, the Terran Khanate. The CE also grants you early access to begin playing now.

If you buy either game, you will get a free copy of the classic RTS Total Annihilation, whose rights Wargaming purchased from Atari in the same bankruptcy auction. Earlier in the year, Wargaming had acquired Gas Powered Games, which was made up of former devs who created TA and its spiritual successor Supreme Commander, including studio head Chris Taylor.

The game is available for pre-order on Steam and GOG

It is pulling from the best of all three, with an acknowledgement from them that 1 and 2 were better than 3, but 3 had some good points.

If you take the best parts of all three games you basically come up with Master of Orion 2.

I preferred the slider-based building of 1 over the plot-based building of 2. It's an entire planet, why do I build only one laboratory or police station?

The sliders in MOO1 I think were much more like the population tasking in MOO2. The buildings were just bonuses and multipliers.

MoO3 was barely a game. it was totally unfinished and bad. one of the biggest disappointments of my gaming career. I don't think I've ever encountered someone who's ONLY played that one. tell us more of your experiences.
