Nintendo announced on Twitter that a future update for Animal Crossing: New Leaf on 3DS will let you summon villagers to your town by tapping compatible Amiibos and cards to your handheld.

Due this fall, the free update offers a fun new wrinkle to New Leaf's gameplay. "Tap your Animal Crossing amiibo card to your game so your favorite villager will visit your town. They may even move in," per a description on Nintendo's website.

Characters unable to become your neighbors will at least give you free stuff if you tap your Amiibos to your 3DS while playing.

It's pretty cool to see Nintendo supporting an "older" game like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, released back in 2012, and it's doubly cool that the functionality will manifest in an interesting way.
