HTC Vive HMD Incompatible with Nvidia GTX 1080 and 1070 Display Port

It looks like Nvidia's latest GPUs might have a few bugs to iron out when it comes to virtual reality headsets.

15

The newest Nvidia GPUs, the 1080 and 1070, are supposed to offer the highest grade of quality for virtual reality. Of course, this means nothing if you can’t actually use your VR headset. According to Tom’s Hardware, and several threads on Reddit, and the official Nvidia forums, the HTC Vive isn’t detected when you plug it into the 10 series cards using a Display Port. The issue has been around for a month, according to threads on Reddit, and so far it looks like Nvidia has been pretty silent on the issue at hand.

This is a pretty big deal, considering virtual reality was a huge part of the foundation for Nvidia’s marketing of the new 10 series cards. There hasn’t been any official announcements on whether Nvidia is working on the issue, though a few responses in various threads have said that users can expect the fix to come in the form of a new driver update sometime in the near future. Is this true? We can’t really say, yet, but it doesn’t bode well for those looking to get the most out of their virtual reality headsets.

Of course, if you aren’t using the Display Port to run the Vive to your graphics card, then you probably haven’t run into any of these issues, and you have nothing to worry about. If you do use the Display Port, and you don’t want to constantly unplug devices from your graphics card, and cut down on wear and tear, then several users have suggest picking up a Display Port to HDMI adapter, like this one, which can be found on Best Buy’s website.

Of course, these are only solutions for those looking to get everything up and running now, and the solution seems to differ from person to person, and system to system. We can’t guarantee it will work for you, but it’s worth a try if you’re having problems getting your HTC Vive working with your brand new GTX 1070 or 1080.

Have you noticed any of these issues with your HTC Vive and Nvidia 10 series graphics card? Have a solution we didn’t touch on? Feel free to share it in by responding to this thread in the Chatty.

How the hell does that make it through QC?

HMD owners are a small enough segment still to push the product out even with their specific features needing additional iterations.

thats the thing that makes this really stupid. if they hadn't slapped that on the box, it would be a small oversight. with that on the box its a massive blunder and maybe false advertising.

technically it is, via HDMI, and if a future driver update fixes the DP soon enough it should be NBD to 95%+

Depends on what card you buy. I got an Asus 1080 Strix which comes with an extra HDMI port for VR HMDs, so this problem doesn't affect me.

The Vive doesn't come with a display port, it comes with HDMI. Doesn't that work fine?

        It supports both.

Vive supports Displayport as well. I'd like to use Displayport on mine so I don't have to swap the HDMI input between my Vive and the cable running to my living room

Same. That and the reduced USB requirements were some of the minor reasons I chose Vive.

wow that is shitty, IMO VR right now is the best reason to get one of these.

I wonder what makes this incompatible versus using a displayport monitor? If it's DirectMode being a problem, I could see it being fixed in a patch.

I think I saw on Reddit that you can buy a $40 adaptor to make it work. Obviously not ideal but you can get it to work.

Eh? You only need hdmi for the Vive. This isn't as apocalyptic as it sounds.

Yeah I have a 1080 and it's hooked up via HDMI. Is there any gain to DP?

Yeah I never even noticed there was a problem because I just used the HDMI port on the card.

This is a negative for people who want to use Displayport if they're already using the HDMI slot on their card for something else like home theater. The 1070 and 1080 both have three DP inputs and one HDMI.

Likely not completely Nvidia's fault. DisplayPort compliance is all over the place in the industry.

I think the Vive HMD uses HDMI, but the breakout box has inputs for both HDMI and DP. I'm guessing they have a DP to HDMI converter in the breakout box. There's probably some incompatibility there.

Also I think Nvidia added DP 1.3/1.4 in the new 10 series cards, so that's also something new compared to the 900 series of cards.
