There's an interview with Yahn Bernier of Valve on Fortress Center. There's questions in there about the engine, the gameplay, skill levels and the licensing of their own engine to other companies.

  • i think what happend was TF2 was turning into "gold edition of CS" and then im sure they were planning for a new engine anyway for HL2 and they just said "hey, we dont want to look like CS... they already have that, let just use the new engine because it gets us lots of things and TFC and CS will keep people playing valve stuff anyway"

    i meen switching to the new engine basically gets them anything they want. they can do vehicles right if the ywant im sure, they do terrain if they want im sure, they can do higher world and model triangles counts im sure. they are probably ditching software renderer. also the longer they wait the higher the min system specs are and the more people with broadband, the more people able to take use of the voice communication. also they scarapped the 1st version of HL too and that worked out good for them so they were probably even more OK with it the second time around.
