Free Doom demo gets extended for the hell of it

Play the first level of the single-player campaign.

13

Bethesda and id got fans excited about Doom again with a rousing launch. During E3, they announced that a demo of the first level of the single-player campaign was playable the week of the show. Now that has been extended.

In a tweet revealing the extension, the company said it was "due to popular demand." Apparently there was no reason not to do it, so Bethesda said what the hell. There were no details released on how long this demo would last, so grab it while you can.

At E3, the first expansion for the game was revealed, called Unto the Evil.

yeah why is this a limited time thing? I figured from the Shackhype I'd get it eventually but playing that demo made me want to get get it right away. I don't understand why demos are mostly a thing of the past now.

It costs extra money to host and patch demos. On Steam it is probably not a big deal but on consoles I am sure Sony & MS don't make it easy.

Agreed, pretty silly to do a 90's shareware/demo throwback and then yank it. Never understood that. It can only help sales if it stays perpetual.

Remember when I could download a demo/shareware and play it without the internet or digital delivery big brother controlling whether or not the demo launches? Good times indeed!

Couldn't you run mods on the quake demo? I don't remember... Endless fun.

Possibly the best map was released with support for unlimited play in the demo. In those days, a free multiplayer game was a rare thing. Yeah, it had an active community, centered around one map.

Weren't there a huge amount of people constantly playing the demo version of Battlefield 1942 on Iwo Jima, too?

They were missing out on the randomly generated maps which fucking owned. Jumping into a big CTF where you learned the flow of the map over the course of a game was awesome.

Remember when the free DOOM mp demo came out, and it sucked arse, so no one wanted to buy the full version? Whoops.

So can they actually deactivate this demo even if you have it downloaded to your console? That would suck.

Good to hear, I played the first part of it and haven't been back to it (yet); and I forgot that it was time-limited.

Doom demo hasn't sold me on buying the full version but I am very impressed with how smooth it runs (on the PS4).
