Friday Xbox News
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 29, 2000 10:06am PDTTwo Xbox news items from Game Informer. First of all, Microsoft will be shipping their console with a parental control unit which should make US regulators as well as parents happy. Secondly, Microsoft has announced that Metal Gear Solid X will be a launch title for the Xbox. Since the PS2 version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is set to be released next winter, it looks like Microsoft's Xbox will have it just a little bit earlier.

It is more powerful than the PIII-600 that the current X-Box stats feature. (Why the hell is MS going with Intel, anyway, when they can get a better processor for cheaper from AMD!?) Not in clock speed...it's only 300 MHz. However, it is still VERY powerful.
In fact, the PS2's power is what's giving developers trouble. "The problem with the PS2 is that there aren't enough limits," says one PS2 developer. (Paraphrased, I remember the meaning, but not the exact quote.)
Lets look at Sony's 'innovations': 2 controller ports- WHY!? Every major console to be released or which has been released since 96 has had four ports. Now, if you want to play with your buddies, you'll have to fork out the extra cash for a multitap. Why not just design it with four controller ports to begin with. Consoles are beginning to live and die by their ability to have 'social gamers' play. Look at Goldeneye...
No public Internet plans. Hell even Nintendo, the most tight lipped of all has announced this for their console. What's up with this, Sony? Pretty lame if you ask me.
Anti-aliasing that's tough to program for. Alot of Dreamcast's first gen games look better than Sony's first gen. Nice move there Sony.
Linux-based dev OS. I'm not going to break out into a OS war, but look at the game/PC development landscape.. Everybody is doing their stuff on Win NT/2000. Another forward thinking move by Sony.
Daggah, it's obvious you have some past biases that cloud your thinking (talk about an understatement).
I doubt the PS2 will be a tough competitor to MS- I'd even say that Nintendo has a better shot than Sony.
Better luck next time.

1) Listen to what gamers want and..
2) Listen to what game developers want.
Like Sega, they've learned from what Sony did with PSX and taken it to the next step. Other than their slick marketing campaigns, it seems like Sony has forgotten their own formula for success in the console game world...GAMES!! I'll be playing my Dreamcast and PC games and say screw the PS2. But when Xbox comes out I'll be first in line.

Microsoft is sticking its dick straight up Sony's tight little ass. They're screwing every which way but sideways. If Sony manages to sell more then three games for every console sold, I'd be really surprised. Can you say "overpriced DVD player?"
MGSX is not MGS2.
Get a clue.
