The "fresh and in your face" guys of the FiringSquad have done a 3dfx driver comparision looking if that Geometry Assist function in the new drivers actually means anything.

  • 'Geometry Assist' isn't entirely BS, it's a good idea in theory.

GA onlt works with games that can use the Direct3D TnL HAL.

Basically, Microsoft's software fallback for cards that don't have TnL sucks it's not very optimized. What 3dfx does with GA is they fool Direct3D into thinking the cards have hardware TnL. Because of this, Direct3D doesn't do the transformations and lighting, and, instead, it asks the '3d card' to do it. GA is a 'optimised' software TnL engine to replace Microsoft's one.

The Issue with 3dmark, is that 3dMark already has it's own TnL engine for non TnL cards. GA will have no effect if 3dMarks TnL engine is being used.
