SoF Gold GONE GOLD!

Raven programmer Jake Simpson updated his .plan file with the word that the Gold version of Soldier of Fortune has gone gold. This version adds extra multiplayer options to the game, and will be available as retail product but also as free upgrade for current Soldier of Fortune owners. There are two new deathmatch modes, bots, new models and skins, several new levels (Gamespy has a list) and also some bug fixes. Jake mentions the download should be available when the retail hits stores. Here's two screenshots that we got back in July [shot 1, shot 2]. There are also 48 screenshots on Gamespy.

  • Damn straight current users better gat a free upgrade. Other than being a neat short feature-film, this game was one I could have done without.

I spent my $39 or $49, I can't remember how much it was. The thing I remember is how short the singleplayer game was, and the cool level of violence. The ability to inflict visable, detailed pain was the only redeeming point, and it wore out fast. Shipping without bots was kinda lame, and there should have been some mini-missions for the singleplayer to try, after the 'Find-A-Nuke' story ended. Following the storyline, the singleplayer collects points - but for what purpose? And why couldn't I outfit my guy with just grenades if I wanted to? Or just rockets? Or just a machinegun, a flakvest and tons of ammo? Why, damnit why?!

I hate how we SOF suckers helped finance EF, which is an even shorter game. They should have waited on releasing SOF, and switched everything over to the Q3 engine like 3dRealms did with Duke4, and included bots and all the extra levels together. Not only is the Q2 engine the community slut, the SOF game us 'original customers' got wasn't anywhere near finished.

I'm a bit disappointed with Raven. I followed the development of EF all through the cycle, and asked tons of Q's, most of which got answered with "we simply don't have the time to do that", or "the game would still be in development if we did that". The game isn't about Raven's financial success, it's about my satisfaction. The EF game is critically acclaimed as being too short, and I must say SOF had a bit of the same problem. Sure HL had repetitive areas, but it playwise lasted weeks longer than SOF or EF ever hoped to last.

Raven, sure you got cash flow at my expense, but I'll be more choosy the next time I find $50 burning a hole in my pocket, and I might listen to the magazine reviews, and not just notice the website hype your inbred fansites generate.

Not everyone can be a Valve or a 3dRealms, I guess. Waiting isn't the hardest part - it's admitting you're through being testbed consumer.

Download the free upgrade? You bet! After all, I paid for it.

    Thanks!
