I think everyone knows that Blizzard is only doing this to focus on the people who have "catch them all" syndrome and already spend hundreds of dollars on microtransactions in other games.

It isn't for the people who don't give a shit about cosmetic stuff. I think Blizzard is doing the right thing here because it will hopefully fund the game for quite awhile long past release. They don't want a paid DLC model that fractures the player base.

Yeah, it works for me, way better than the Hearthstone or HotS approach IMO. You can play both of those totally for free and earn gold to buy stuff, but it takes fucking forever.

Yeah, it seems silly these days to make a game that doesn't provide a way for whales to throw money at them. Even if it's less than a hundred of them out of a million players, they'll still see some major bank from it.

They wouldn't be if the boxes included guns, power ups, or benefits to game play. We'd be pissed. They don't, and as with the WoW micro stuff, mounts and pets, it doesn't interfere with anything.

i'm not so sure i agree with the reference to WoW.

yesterday i bought from the WoW store a token that gave me:
            - level 100
            - two maxed professions
            - maxed cooking
            - a whole bunch of good
            - complete set of gear

seems pretty gameplay benefitting to me. if this isn't "pay 2 win" then what is?

Yeah, I spaced that. It's hard to compare that boost to Overwatch though right? Obviously if that package of improvement could be applied to Overwatch, where gear or weapons would be theoretically helpful, people indeed would be pissed.

WoW isn't directly competitive which makes a big difference. i don't think we'll see P2W items on the Overwatch store. i'm no john titor and anything is possible, but i think blizzard is smart enough to keep that out of a competitive game

              May 24, 2016 9:58 AM

Because you don't win shit doing that. You're just paying to skip questing/leveling, which IIRC, you don't like doing in the first place.

Now, if you could pay to get raid geared or high end PvP stuff, I'd agree.

are those not part of the gameplay? royalally was talking about any DLC item with "benefits to gameplay." i'm the one that brought up the term "win."

imo the real difference here is that WoW isn't considered a competitive game. Overwatch obviously is. it's more important that the playing field be level with Overwatch

pretty sure pay2win refers to paying 2 have a benefit over human competition. everything you got was can be obtained completely from playing the game without any human interaction whatsoever.

Yeah, I've always felt like "Pay to win" means over other people. A game offering a way to skip a bunch of gameplay isn't P2W, but I don't understand why anyone would do that.

Still, they're done in a fairly inoffensive way so it's not too bad.

Yeah, cosmetic-only is the way to go when it comes to microtransactions. I never liked it when they provided experience boosts, leveling boosts, mounts, etc. for people that have a lot more disposable income than me.

I know, I did say it was done in an inoffensive way.

On principle though, if I'm paying up front for a game I don't expect it to have microtransactions. Thats not the reality a lot of times these days, but I'm not gonna give anyone a free pass and not call it bullshit.

Would you rather have junk like this that doesn't matter, or have to pay for heroes and map packs later?

They've promised the latter as free updates for everyone. I have absolutely no reason to complain about paid cosmetics. I wish every shooter out there would do the same.

Any time you see "loot box" type mechanic in a game it is going to be followed with microtransactions. There is really no other reason to do it.

    • reply
      May 24, 2016 9:55 AM

Buying loot boxes is such a terrible thing to spend money on. If you could specifically buy skins that would be one thing, but spending money to essentially roll the dice is lame. I knew if I bought a pack of these I'd end up with a ton of sprays and taunts or whatever, sprays are only fun when they are user created like TF2

      • reply
        May 24, 2016 10:50 AM

It's contrary to how they do it in Heroes. I don't see why it would have been bad/wrong to keep the free stuff random in the loot crates, but be able to play for specific items. Or, okay, fine, even have split tiers. Free stuff is meh to just ok. Paid stuff is super cool.

Don't waste coins when you are low levels currently. Almost every other match you level up and get a loot crate, so why spend gold on something you might get out of a box.

Once people hit level 30-50+ it will take you a while to level up then people will start spending coins.
