Pentium4 Halloween Release
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 23, 2000 5:40am PDTAccording to ZDNet, Intel is releasing the Pentium4 in the week of October 30 at 1.5 and 1.4Ghz speeds. Their story also has some info on full systems that Dell and HP will be offering. The Register however has some OEM prices for the CPU, 1.3Ghz at $635, 1.4GHz at $805. Indeed no mention of the 1.5Ghz part, they say it doesn't look like that speed will make the October release. The Register has been wrong in the past though :)

I'm using 128MB ram, but I'm seriously considering jumping to 256. Win2k and Visual C++ eat all but 30MB of it. But I got a 300MB page file and U2W SCSI access, so it's no slouch...

I suspect the Register is a bit off on this one.

The P4 has a big badass memory bandwidth, and Q3 is one of those only game where *much* better framerates are possible.
But if you're a POS and are really willing to spend for a 40fps boost (near 200fps instead of 160fps) in 640x480, and pay nearly $1000 for a P4-1.4, $1000 for 256MB of RDIMM (maybe even more), $400 for a GF2 Ultra, and then finally the mobo we never heard of, then go for it, I'm not responsible for crying after your daddy (I know the age average here is 8) or for being a rich bastard.
I'm sticking with AMD.
the whole world is not foolish.
