Fire Emblem Fates: Marriage and Children

Learn how to woo and wow.

0

Returning from Fire Emblem: Awakening is the mechanic of marriage and children between various characters. This is achieved by obtaining a maximum support rating between two characters, who are then able to get married. This in turn leads to, in most cases, the conceiving of a child who can then join the player’s army with skills and appearance inherited from both parents. This guide will teach you everything you need to know about marriage and children in Fire Emblem Fates.

Making this bond happen is fairly simple and straightforward. All you really need to do is pair the characters up in battle until their relationship status reaches “S” Rank. You can also rank up relationships by having the two characters talk to each other, as well as by gifting them accessory gifts when they ask for them. Then the characters will marry, if they are able to. It should also be noted that you do not HAVE to marry off the main protagonist, however, not doing so may cut off many of the Paralogue side quests available if children are not conceived.

Changes to the System

A few changes have been made to the system, and while the child conceived was dependent on the mother in Fire Emblem: Awakening; the opposite is true in Fates. Instead the children conceived are dependent on the father, with the mother providing the hair color. This change excludes any children or Corrin and Azura.

Another change came to the Paralogue side quests. Instead of having to rely on being a certain way through the story for a child recruitment mission to show up, Fire Emblem: Fates now shows these missions as soon as the applicable characters reach an “S” Rank support with each other. This also brings some changes to the difficulty of the missions since they aren’t locked behind main story progression. Instead of being a set difficulty these Paralogue quests will scale in level depending on the player’s completion of the main story. This means that players further along in the story will have to fight against stronger enemies. This also means that enemies may be upgraded classes, which could endanger the child when attempting to recruit them further in the storyline.

An Inheritance Worth a Thousand Words

The skills and class for each child is completely dependent on the skills and class of the parents involved. Generally children will inherit the following from their parents:

  • Their hair color will be passed down by their mother (However the male version of Kana will inherit his father’s hair color instead).
  • One class from each parent will be passed down.
  • One skill from each parent will be passed down.

Children actually gain three classes when recruited. They have their own class, a class from their mother, and a class from their father. To figure out which class the parent will pass down you can simply start at the Primary Class of each parent and work your way down. Keep going down the list if

  • The class is a Songstress, which cannot be passed down to children.
  • The class has no alternate class.
  • The class is something the child already has.

If you make it to the bottom of the list without finding a suitable class for the child, then the parent will not pass down a class.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Both Azura and Corrin have the ability to have two children, but a male Corrin can only have two children if he is paired with Azura.
  • Children can reach “S” Rank Support ratings and marry each other, however they cannot have children unless they are paired with Corrin.
  • All children are recruited without any promotions but will scale in level based on the player’s game completion percentage.
  • Children will begin with a “C” Rank Support rating for both parents and any siblings that they might have.

Same Sex Marriage

The main protagonist, Corrin, is not only unique in his/her ability to achieve an S-Rank Support rating with almost every member of the opposite gender, but Corrin can also achieve a S-Rank Support rating with one member of the same gender as well. Male Corrin can form an S-Rank with Niles, and the female version of Corrin can form an S-Rank with Rhajat. This will also allow them to marry, however they will not be able to have children and the player will be unable to recruit the children that would have been recruited from a regular S-Rank Support relationship.
