Welcome to 2016! The arrival of the new year means it's time to sit down and watch some speed runs. Awesome Games Done Quick begins today from the Hilton Washington Dulles Airport Hotel in Herndon, Virginia and will continue for the next seven days. Speed runners will be running through a number of big-time games, all in an effort to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Speed runs will be going around the clock and Shacknews is here to offer a few to keep an eye on.

Day 1 Runs to Watch

Splatoon (Wii U) - 9:00AM PT

Many think of Splatoon as a multiplayer ink-blasting spectacle and that certainly would be an accurate description. However, it's easy to forget that this game does, in fact, have a single-player campaign. So tune in, as Tones Balones attempts to complete the full game in less than an hour flat. This will be Splatoon's first time represented at one of these events and it's certainly a great choice to kick off this week's festivities.

Diddy Kong Racing (Nintendo 64) - 4:05PM PT

Living in an age of Mario Kart, the younger generation is largely unfamiliar with the magic of Diddy Kong Racing. To the uninitiated, think of the overworld layout of a Super Mario 64 and cross that with Mario Kart-style racing. It's an adventure that was unlike anything seen at the time and actually hasn't really been replicated since. This will also act as the event's first competitive race, so watch as MrsGizamaluke and Toufool31 attempt to wrap this sucker up in just under a half hour.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - 10:45PM PT

Here's another forgotten classic. While Nintendo is remembered for a lion's share of the popular Zelda games, Capcom has actually had a hand in a couple of memorable series entries. Most notably, there's the pair of 'Oracle' games, which tied together to create a double-length Zelda extravaganza. Those that don't remember Oracle of Ages will get their chance to re-visit this old gem when Casusby attempts to complete it in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
