No Maniacs At QuakeCon

Thanks Blue. The New York Times has put up a nice article here about QuakeCon and how people were generally nice and normal. Very refreshing, since I was afraid the mainstream press would find some way to put a bad spin on it. Here's a great quote from the article:

Only rarely did the Colorado killings come up in conversation, and the general sentiment was summed up by one older player who said, "Playing Quake no more turns kids into killers than wearing Goth clothes turns them into vampires."

  • I\'m going to try and remember what i wrote, but this is just a shadow of what i went into. yes, i just screamed fuck about as loud a could after losing that post :). Anyone have any idea why the hell ie just automatically refreshed the page?!?!?!?
    Anyway, on to the post:
How ridiculous is all of this bullshit? I\'m getting really sick of all this bs that has turned America\'s scrutinizing eye on our community. When a business man goes on a shooting spree, you do not see a rack of time magazines asking the bold question \"Does Business Turn Our Adults into KILLERS?\" The only reason this has become such an epic historical event is because the 2 killers were WHITE, MIDDLE CLASS, SUBURBAN kids. \"How could THEY ever go wrong?\" The children gunned down in gang-related crossfire didn\'t get people magazine foldout posters. School shootings have apparently been on a steady DECLINE, so why didn\'t we ever hear about all those shootings that have apparently been quite numerous? The same EXACT THING happened in the 60\'s. The media gave the black community very small press coverage or support when they were trying to get all the blacks to vote. Until of course, 3 whites were killed in their car by the KKK. Wow, then the media was there in droves!

This is a blatant attack on a group of people that reject sports as the pinnacle of human interaction and personal growth(maybe for 40 BC). We have chosen not to fit into the mold of hobbies that schools try to jam us into, thus we have been thrown into the same corner as KILLERS. People are looking us soberly into the eyes and telling us what we love is a threat. Now everyone seems to be trying to prove to america that we aren\'t what we NEVER WERE -- dangerous.

As morbid as it might be, this whole affair has become a major tactical win for religious nuts who want to abolish the separation of church and state (and parents who think media is a quality baby-sitter/parental substute.) Great idea, Falwell and company, considering all of the huge, long-standing conflicts present today are thanks to religious groups with agendas that extend outside of their own personal lives, and into ours. Remember, these are the same people that attacked Teletubbies for attempting homosexual jedi-mind tricks in the children of today. Don\'t agree to be meek in this whole affair and say, \"look! i fit into your idea of what is right! I have no distinguising characteristics! I am what you are!\" Personally, if we value truth in this society, THAT should be the thing we chant towards a picture of a white jock waving an american flag. in our classrooms followed by a hearty recital of California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys (tune played over the PA, of course.)
\"...You will jog for the master race
and always wear the happy face
Close your eyes can\'t happen here
Big Bro\' on white horse is near
    ....
    Now it is 1984
Knock Knock on your front door
    It\'s the suede/denim police
they have come for your uncool neice!...\"

What america stands for is incredible, what the reality is, is scary. Greed, deception, ratings, power. Example, JFK Jr. He sure got alot of coverage! Say, didn\'t his wife and her sister die in the SAME CRASH? Why that\'s funny! they didn\'t mention them much! Because, they weren\'t profitable to the networks! If people heard some garbage about his sister-in-law\'s life, they\'d just switch the channel!

While i reached a different ending than my original post that ie ate, i think i got the same point across. The media isn\'t interested in information, it is interested in fueling our curiousity by asking bold questions that don\'t necessarily have any substance, but are quite shocking and don\'t offend the majority, while the minorities are either slammed or whose plight\'s are ignored for the NEXT BIG CASH COW OF A STORY. But i\'m sure you all know that. Just posting my opinion for what has become an D DAY-scale attack on our way of life for what 2 people out of a few billion have done.
