Rise of the Tomb Raider adds Twitch-centered features for Expedition mode

Twitch has allowed the streaming of games for a while, but it's not everyday that there are features specifically built to utilize streaming. Rise of the Tomb Raider will contain some of these features.

One of the items mentioned in our Rise of the Tomb Raider review was the game's new Expedition mode, taking Lara Croft through a number of challenges, like a Score Attack mode and Chapter Replays with sprinkled-in variants. If this sounds like a mode built for Twitch streamers, you're not far off. In fact, Twitch is supplementing this new mode with some new interactive features.

As detailed on the Twitch blog, broadcaster can enable a feature that allows stream viewers to vote on the Expedition cards that the broadcaster uses for their Expedition run. Likewise, viewers of these streams are also eligible for some new unlockables, such as side missions, challenge tombs, and crypts by tuning in via the Xbox One Twitch app.

This is something of a fascinating addition to Rise of the Tomb Raider, if for no other reason, than because it's utilizing new media in a fashion that hasn't really been seen before. Streaming is not only an option for these games, but there are actual features being specifically centered around it. It should be interesting to see how many Twitch streamers (and viewers) utilize this new feature.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
