That 30 frames max your eye can see bullshit is gay. If you\'ve ever played q2 and set the cl_maxfps to 30, and then to a rate as low as 15 higher (45), you will notice the difference easily... so a 30+fps jump would DEFINATELY be noticable

And as for that guy who says he\'s making a good living, whatever dude. Anybody who feels the need to tell others about what a good earning he\'s got needs a bullet between the eyes. The original post about why people would want high FPS instead of pretty graphics was farcical enough.

Some people don\'t feel like a computer should need to be upgraded every 6 months, when it can easily cost over $700 or $800 every time. Furthermore, nobody cares if you disagree. Just don\'t read the article, bright spark :)

Well... Its nice to see that people understand the technical issues with refresh rates, etc. But a FPS of 120 is a serious improvement visually and noticeable to 85. That is because it comes down to AVERAGE and SUSTAINED and RIGHT THE HELL NOW framerates. If you have a 120 FPS, then it NEVER dips below 85 or whatever your refresh is. If you are getting 85 frames, you are actually under a significant portion of the time.

Its all about the phat frames, people!

Without sounding condescending or arrogant, I think you\'re in the minority when you play at 1024x768. When framerate counts, lower resolutions are always faster and support higher refresh rates (easily past 100Hz).

I am a Quake2 Addict, and I can tell you that most MONITORS can\'t display over a certain number of frames per second. I run @ 1024x768 and my monitor maxes out @ 85hz - that\'s 85 cycles (refreshes) per second. So no matter how much faster the game runs past 85, the monitor can\'t update any faster.

Now that being said, I\'m also a RailGunGod, and 85 fps is much better than 60 fps. I have played Q2 on average of about 1.5 hours a day for over 2 years. So I can tell the difference.

I read the info on the site that #19 posted. Now #13, go read it and then try to tell people that over 40fps doesn\'t make a difference.

Actually, 30 fps would be fine if it was \'locked\'. Look at Doom2, it had a max framerate of 30 and felt as smooth as glass... the reason? It generally stayed at 30fps, so it felt fluid.

You can definately tell the difference between 30,60,90 fps... however, I much rather have 40 fps locked than 30-60 fps (depending on how complex the area is)

I was rather expecting this sooner or later. The pretty graphics are nice to look at for a few hours, then your turn them all off for fps. Get rid of all the eye candy and what are we left with? What has Q3A brought to gameplay? I haven\'t seen all of it, but what I have seen doesn\'t impress me and so for the first time, I won\'t be waiting anxiously for the next new id title. :(

If you can\'t tell the difference between 30 and 60fps, or 60 and 100fps, it\'s because you haven\'t had prolonged exposure to them. Framerate is crucial for precise aim, especially with rail. The faster the better, to no degree of limitation. If 200fps was possible, people who spend time playing with it will easily be able to tell the difference. The only reason you can\'t is because you haven\'t experienced it or don\'t care to see it.

I am using a 300 mhz pentium 2, and a voodoo3 3k, and I always play with ALL of the pretty options enabled, and I always get 20 - 30 fps! These guys are MANIACS that they have to squeeze another 1.2 fps out of 500mhx pentium3 that runs at 70 fps. Maybe you can tell the difference between 20 and 40, but over that it doesn\'t matter.

When I got q3a I first set my controls then played around with mousesensitivity and brightness then I played, played played ...

Playing for me means fragging not hard work tweaking every clientvariable I can find for some extra fps. And I want the game how it was designed out of the box aim ... net.

I donÂ’t have the money to upgrade my computer so that I will be able to play Quake3 at decent FPS with minimal slow down and \"computer\" lag. I donÂ’t even think my 4 year old Cyrix 200mhz, 50 megs of RAM, Monster Fusion 16 megs is even enough to run it at all. It Has not been able to run the q3test.

Yeah, now what was the point of all those pretty graphics. The only people that want to play this game competitively will be playing Quake3: Ass-Ugly with and insane frame rate. id might as well be an engine licensing company... it\'s not like they\'re really doing anything innovative anyways, or heaven forbid pushing FPS gaming into something a bit more respectable competition wise.

Hey Jackhole... you know some people actually go out and make a living. when not overburdened by the system at hand I feel the need to upgrade my computer... It\'s my perogative to have a TNT2 and SLI Voodoo2s in a way overclocked Celeron 400 system. Not everyone has to beg daddy to upgrade their computer. It\'s called work, you should try it at least once.

The article is nice, I suppose, but I\'m amazed there\'s any press about it--it\'s just a bunch of stuff that any idiot could figure out on their own. The benchmark improvements they noted with dynamic & vertex lighting are obviously a bug in either their driver or in the timedemo structure itself. An average increase of 50fps just doesn\'t happen with one simple tweak, especially when everyone I hear from (including myself) notices at most a 5-10 fps increase.

They should change the guide to \"Since your too cheap to buy a good system, you too can run Q3Test with a 486 with 16KB of RAM\"
