Pac-Man 256 from Crossy Road creator gobbles up mazes on iOS and Android today

This is the day that Pac-Man muches dots as he normally does, but this time, he's doing it to save his own existence in this free-to-play effort from Bandai Namco and Hipster Whale, the developer behind the iOS hit Crossy Road

The legend of Pac-Man's 256th level is well-known. That's as far as the original arcade game will go, since the old-school arcade glitch will kick in and not allow the player to proceed any further. It's signaled by the screen being garbled by visual programming glitches. Now those glitches have become a single entity and Pac-Man must run for dear life.

Pac-Man 256 sees Pac-Man munching dots across an endless maze, but behind him, the powerful 256 glitch is in pursuit. It consumes all it touches, so if it catches him, it's Game Over. Along the way, players must continue to elude ghosts, as usual, while also collecting bonus fruit and coins.

Pac-Man 256 is available now as a free-to-play game on the App Store and Google Play store.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Do you pay for anything? If you do, its a fail. Just charge a fee and call it a day.

I've only had time to play a few rounds, but it looks like you do get a limited number of free games a day.

I've never played, but stories I've read are that later levels are nearly, if not outright impossible without some purchased powerups.

Interesting. I I think I stopped around level 98, but I never paid anything.

Hard to replace Pac-Man with over 100 different characters.

It really isn't. You just make a character with the same dimensions. It's not like pac-man's shape is integral to the gameplay, it could be just about anything gobbling up dots.

You have unlimited games in 'Free Play' mode (which incidentally, is my favorite mode for its simplicity)

The credits are for the mode which has powerups and stuff.

I kind of want this on Windows 10, is that gonna happen? Crossy road plays a lot better with a gamepad.

Wait so it's just one big level you keep playing till you die? Boring.
