PlayStation Network down, Sony claims it's due to 'factors external'

With the weekend ahead of us, now is not a great time for the PlayStation Network to go down.

The PlayStation Network is currently experiencing connection issues on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 as both users and Sony themselves have confirmed this afternoon.

The PSN status page shows both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 are currently affected by this new service outage. Sony says users may be experiencing issues related to launching certain games or game functionality, which may be due to "factors external to PSN." Sony is tracking the progress of the resolution of this issue.

It's interesting to see this happen on the weekend when the PlayStation Plus version of Driveclub is available. Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida had concerns about the release of the game as the company would be "duly cautious" about how the game is released. While we don't believe this outage has anything to do with Driveclub, we still feel after several months of waiting, it's a shame those interested in the game won't be able to experience it much until this issue is resolved.

We'll be monitoring the status of PSN and will be sure to update this story if anything is resolved.
