The Division won't have a companion app after all

Tom Clancy's The Division was supposed to release with a companion app, but Massive Entertainment is nixing that idea.

Massive Entertainment has confirmed the companion app for its upcoming game, Tom Clancy's The Division, has been cancelled saying it created an imbalance that negatively affected gameplay.

The companion app, which Massive Entertainment referred to as a “really meaningful” experience, would have allowed for both simultaneous and asymmetric gameplay between the player’s mobile device and the game itself.

Players would be able to seamlessly join a game as a drone, which would allow them to provide tactical support for its teammates by giving them a bird’s eye view of the battlefield. The companion app would also allow the ability to offer armor buffs to teammates as well.

Companion app or not, Ubisoft’s The Division is still scheduled to host a beta on the Xbox One later this year with additional betas taking place on the PC and PlayStation 4 in early 2016. The game itself is scheduled to release on March 8.

You can check out all of the neat features the companion app would have added to The Division.

      Well, that's disappointing.

It's a pretty big bummer that we have to stifle interesting an innovative ways to interact with games to cater to the lowest common denominator.

I imagine there are ways they could have designed this to not give an advantage, like only allow one player as a drone per game and allow PC users to play as a drone as well so you could always have one player per game with the overview.

Anyway, pretty sad to see a cool way to interact with an otherwise "played out" genre go away.

        I'm betting it's a budget thing.

It was probably too expensive to develop this app alongside the game.

it would have been laggy as fuck anyway. Best to stick with touchscreens as 2nd screen utility like FO4 until the touch latency improves

I think these are great news, I couldn't really see this fit in.. First of it would be bad for balance as one should always use a player on a tablet for benefit and thus 'lose ground' by not using it. And why not just include the drone as a ingame thing for people actually playing the game on the machine.. thus not making it an awkward (who should log in and play from the tablet today to give us the extra boost).. :)
